PALM BEACH, FLORIDA: Donald Trump announced that he would use his presidential powers to end Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigations into his conduct if he is reelected in 2024.

Speaking on conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt’s show on Thursday, October 24, the former president vowed to fire Smith, who has brought multiple criminal charges against the former president, and to drop the cases against him.

Donald Trump says firing Jack Smith is 'so easy'

When Hugh Hewitt asked Donald Trump if he would “pardon yourself” or “fire Jack Smith” if reelected, Trump did not hesitate.

“Oh, it’s so easy. It’s so easy. I would fire him within two seconds," he responded.

Smith, who was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland, has been overseeing two major investigations into Trump.

One probe relates to Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, while the other concerns his alleged mishandling of classified documents.

While a federal judge recently dismissed the classified documents case, Smith is appealing the decision.

The former president continues to face charges in the election subversion case.

Jack Smith’s case against Donald Trump

Donald Trump currently faces four charges from Jack Smith based on his investigation into the former president's attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

These include conspiracy against rights, conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, and obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding.

Though Supreme Court declared presidents and former president have immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts they took while in office, Smith filed a superseding indictment in August, reducing the scope of allegations but maintaining the four charges.

Despite Trump’s confidence, any decision to fire Smith and drop the charges would rely on his administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ) and attorney general, according to CNN.

Donald Trump’s accusations against US' 'weaponized' justice system

Throughout his legal battles, Donald Trump has consistently claimed that the justice system is being weaponized against him because he is running for president.

Despite the lack of evidence to support this claim, the 78-year-old politician has made it a central talking point of his campaign, alleging political bias behind the charges against him.

Trump has repeatedly suggested that if reelected, he would use the justice system against his political rivals.

During the interview with Hewitt, Trump reiterated that he would appoint a special prosecutor to investigate President Joe Biden and his family.

Trump has not only focused on Smith and the current administration but has also labeled his political rivals as “the enemy from within.”
