NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Former president Donald Trump made a blatantly false claim about incumbent Joe Biden being convicted for retaining classified documents as a private citizen, during his interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham on Monday, July 29.

Back in 2023, representatives for Biden reported that he possessed classified documents from his time as a senator and vice president. According to Mediaite, Biden's lawyers voluntarily turned over the material to the federal government following the discovery.

While a special counsel was formed to probe into the incident, they finally declined to press charges on the grounds of Biden being an “elderly man with a poor memory” who is unlikely to be convicted by a jury.

Trump had found himself entangled in a legal mess over classified documents earlier than Biden, reported the publication. An FBI search at Mar-a-Lago turned up a trove of government material in August 2022. The Department of Justice (DoJ) alleged Trump of wilfully retaining the documents and obstructing the government’s efforts to retrieve them.

The GOP nominee pleaded not guilty to the indictment last year, and the case was tossed in early July by a federal judge appointed by him during his term at the White House. The DoJ is appealing the decision at present.

Donald Trump's comments during interview

During the interview, Trump was discussing his assassination attempt and its aftermath with Ingraham, when the host asked, "Why do people not trust the upper echelon of the FBI at this point?”

“Well, they’ve had a bad period of time,” replied Trump, pivoting to the documents case. “I mean, they raided Mar-a-Lago. That’s not so good. And I guess, we bring a suit. You know, we won that whole case. We won it the right way. We won it because won it. We won it in court. It was a big thing. Hardly got any publicity.”

He reiterated his false claim about being legally entitled to keep the documents, saying. "I was allowed. The Presidential Records Act.” This was in direct contradiction with a statement issued by the Nation Archives in 2023, noting that the documents found at Mar-a-Lago were supposed to be given to the agency after Trump vacated the Oval Office.

“Now, with Biden, he really was convicted of that case,” claimed Trump, even though the incumbent was never even indicted.

"He was let go of that case. They said he was incompetent and therefore, he can’t stand trial. And yet, he would’ve been allowed to be president. Think of that. So, he sort of semi-won it. Course, you don’t wanna have that kind of a victory. You win because you’re incompetent. But he actually was guilty," he added.

Internet calls out Donald Trump

The former President was trolled for his false claims by netizens commenting on the news on the Mediaite website. Some claimed that he was mentally unfit, while others said that he was projecting his own issues on Biden.

"Does Trump have dementia or dumbentia?" inquired a person.

"In a couple of weeks he’ll start saying his name is Joe Biden," chided another.

"It's getting better in terms of entertainment value," quipped a third.

"The psychological projection just oozes off this pile-of-garbage," slammed a fourth user.

"Nobody can make the case this lunatic is fit for any kind office, let alone the Presidency. NOBODY," observed a fifth.

"Good God he is the dumbest person to ever lead a cult," expressed yet another.
