WASHINGTON, DC: During the State of the Union (SOTU) address on Tuesday, February 24, Donald Trump highlighted the passing of the bill that bans congressional stock trading.

His statement received support from Democrats, including Senator Elizabeth Warren and several others, who welcomed the move as a step toward greater transparency in government.

Trump also urged Congress to quickly pass the Stop Insider Trading Act bill, which was introduced in the House last month. He emphasized that the bill should move forward “without delay” to prevent conflicts of interest and ensure that lawmakers are held accountable. He also slammed Nancy Pelosi at the event regarding the bill.

Democrats respond positively as Trump calls for the stop of the Insider Trading Act

Warren, a longtime advocate for banning congressional stock trading, applauded as soon as Trump’s remarks. She had previously called such a ban “long overdue.” During the address, she applauded as Trump said, "Let's also ensure that members of Congress cannot corruptly profit from using insider information."

As Trump spoke, the camera showed the Democratic section cheering. Warren, along with her colleagues, was seen applauding the call for action. Trump remarked on the moment, saying, "They stood up so that I can't believe. I can't believe it."

He continues, "Did Nancy Pelosi stand up if she was here? Pass the Stop Insider Trading Act without delay."

Trump referenced Pelosi’s family’s large stock portfolio accumulated over her decades in Congress, which has drawn allegations of insider trading. Pelosi has denied any wrongdoing and endorsed a ban on congressional stock trading in 2022.

Elizabeth Warren calls for end to congressional stock trading

Last year, Elizabeth Warren explained why in a video posted to her X (formerly Twitter) account, saying, "No one in this country should wonder whether or not their senator, their representative, and president is making a decision that is good for the country. Or maybe just good for their own private pocketbook."

The bill has been stalled in the House because many Republicans have not supported it, according to Politico. Democrats are calling for a broader version that would also cover the executive branch.
