WASHINGTON, DC: A recent report has raised concerns about President Biden’s ability to function effectively outside a six-hour daylight window.

At 81 years old, Biden struggles with fatigue and absent-minded gaffes beyond 10 am to 4 pm, particularly when traveling abroad. White House aides revealed this information to Axios in an attempt to mitigate the impact of Biden’s lackluster debate performance.

Disastrous debate performance by Joe Biden

The 90-minute presidential debate, which began at 9 pm, well past Biden’s optimal functioning hours, highlighted these issues. Throughout the debate, Biden frequently appeared vacant, struggled to form coherent sentences, froze mid-thought, misspoke, or appeared slack-jawed.

The performance heightened fears about Biden’s capability to serve another four years in office, as he would be 86 by the end of a second term.

In the aftermath of the debate, reactions within Biden’s campaign and the broader Democratic Party were mixed. Some campaign aides remained calm, describing the debate as an isolated bad night from which they could recover. However, other aides, donors, and senior Democrats were deeply concerned.

Former President Donald Trump and other Republicans seized on the opportunity to question Biden’s fitness for office, amplifying these concerns. First Lady Jill Biden was seen assisting her husband off the debate stage, a moment captured by CNN’s cameras, further fueling questions about Biden’s fitness.

Despite the troubling debate performance, Biden attempted to reassure voters the following day with a more energetic speech in Raleigh, North Carolina. Speaking just after 1 pm, within his preferred time frame, he acknowledged his physical and verbal decline but emphasized his ability to perform the job.

“I don’t walk as easy as I used to, I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to, I don’t debate as well as I used to,” Biden said. “But I know what I do know: I know how to tell the truth. I know right from wrong. And I know how to do this job, I know how to get things done.”

At a watch party after the debate in Atlanta, Jill told her husband in front of supporters, “Joe, you did such a great job. You answered every question," adding, “You knew all the facts."

Calls for Joe Biden to drop out and social media mockery

Biden faced increasing calls from donors and pundits to withdraw from the White House race. CNN reporter John King described a “deep, a wide and a very aggressive panic in the Democratic Party” following Biden’s debate performance.

“It started minutes into the debate — and it continues right now,” he explained. “It involves party strategists. It involves elected officials. It involves fundraisers, and they’re having conversations about the president’s performance, which they think was abysmal, which they think will hurt other people down the party ticket, and they’re having conversations about what they should do about it.”

Social media reactions to Biden’s reported limited functioning hours were swift and critical.

"Good grief. Let’s hope we don’t need a President between 4 PM and 10 AM, or while he’s traveling overseas," one posted on X.

"First it was a 'cold' and now this. Does the office of the president only work 6 hours a day? If there’s an emergency at supper we’re gonna have to wait until 10 AM the next day?" another offered.

"Lol and who believes that? They sequestered him for *a whole week* before the debate and he still short-circuited for 90 minutes," someone else countered.

"'Sundowning' refers to a state of confusion that occurs in the late afternoon and lasts into the night. It can cause various behaviors, such as confusion, pacing, or wandering. Symptoms may affect people with Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia," a comment read.

"Our enemies are laughing," another chimed in.

Polls reflecting public opinion

Polls conducted after the debate indicated a growing concern among voters about Biden’s age and mental fitness.

An Ipsos poll of over 2,500 likely voters showed that only one in five respondents rated Biden’s mental fitness as “good” or “excellent,” a seven-point drop from a poll conducted days earlier. Among likely Democratic voters, the decline was even more pronounced, with only 42% considering Biden mentally fit after the debate, compared to 56% beforehand.

A Morning Consult poll conducted the day after the debate revealed that 60% of respondents believed Biden should “probably” or “definitely” be replaced with another Democratic candidate in the upcoming election, including 47% of Democratic voters.

Despite calls for him to step aside, Biden has refused to drop out of the race. He remains committed to running for re-election, with support from party leaders and former Democratic Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, who have publicly expressed their continued backing for Biden.
