Internet slams Trump for asking judge to delay enforcing $355M NY civil fraud decision for one month
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Former President Donald Trump asked the judge overseeing the New York civil fraud case to delay the enforcement of a $355 million penalty against him for one month, reported CNN.
In a letter to Judge Arthur Engoron sent on Wednesday, February 21, Trump's attorneys, on behalf of all the defendants, including the former President's sons, Donald Trump Jr and Eric Trump, asked the judge to postpone the penalties for an "orderly post-judgment process."
The request was made in the wake of NY attorney general Letitia James's 'unilateral submission' to enforce the judgment just days after the verdict was announced.
On February 16, the GOP frontrunner was hit with a massive $355 million penalty along with a three-year ban from serving in any New York corporations for fraudulently inflating the price of his properties in the state for decades to secure favorable bank loans.
Donald Trump's attorney request time to submit counter-judgment
The former President's attorney, Robert Clifford, criticized the New York attorney general's move after she submitted a draft judgment that would start the countdown for the penalties less than a week after the verdict, as per ABC News.
Pointing out that James has not filed any motion to settle the proposed judgment, the letter claimed her move violated the accepted practices of the NY state court.
The attorneys stated that if the judge opts to enter the attorney general's judgment, the defendants "request the Court stay enforcement of that Judgment for thirty (30) days. Given that the court-appointed monitor continues to be in place, there is no prejudice to the Attorney General in briefly staying enforcement to allow for an orderly post-Judgment process, particularly given the magnitude of Judgment."
"Defendants reiterate their request that the Court set a return date for the proposed Judgment that affords Defendants sufficient time to submit a proposed counter-Judgment," the letter read.
Trump has 30 days to pay the penalty or post a bond once Judge Engoron signs the judgment order.
The ex-president, denying all the accusations against him, slammed the judge and the attorney general for election interference and pledged to appeal the decision. However, each day Trump delays paying the penalty, an additional $87,000 will be added to the $355 million as interest.
