PALM BEACH, FLORIDA: Eric Trump has sparked controversy after claiming that his father, Donald Trump, "saved" the word "Christmas" following what he described as efforts by Barack Obama's administration to limit its use.

He alleged that former president Barack Obama attempted to diminish the use of the word "Christmas" and replace it with more secular terms like "holiday tree."

Eric Trump’s Christmas controversy

During a recent interview with Newsmax, Eric Trump said, "You had a cognizant effort to get rid of the word 'Christmas.'"

"I mean, they were calling it a holiday tree during the Obama administration," he shared, adding, "It wasn't until my father came in and said, 'listen, we're gonna call it a Christmas tree because we celebrate Christmas as a nation.'"

His remarks fit into a broader narrative often expressed by conservative commentators, claiming that traditional Christian values are under attack.

"Faith is under attack, family is under attack," said Eric, suggesting that his father Donald Trump's presidency helped restore these values.

In the interview, Eric also accused Obama of "weaponizing" the IRS to target Christian organizations, calling the actions "absolutely vicious," according to OK Magazine.

However, he did not provide specific examples or evidence to support this claim.

Fact-checking Eric Trump's claims

Shortly after the interview aired, critics took to social media to challenge Eric Trump’s claims.

One user on X shared an image from 2013 of Obama wishing Americans "Merry Christmas" on social media, alongside a 2010 post in which Donald Trump himself used the phrase "happy holiday season."

The juxtaposed images were captioned, "Well, this is awkward," highlighting that both presidents had used inclusive language during the holiday season.

This online reaction raised questions about the accuracy of Eric's statement, as no widespread effort to eliminate the word "Christmas" was documented during Obama’s administration.

Internet trolls Eric Trump's claim Donald Trump saved the word 'Christmas'

After Eric Trump stated his father Donald Trump "saved" the word "Christmas," netizens trolled his false claim.

One user on X wrote, "Donald Trump is the grinch who stole Christmas," and another tweeted, "Obama still lives rent-free in the Trumps’ heads."

"They struggle and battle so hard in their aimless crusade against things that just simply don't exist, and never will," a netizen commented.

Someone else opined, "Do voters really believe this? Also, how is this affecting the American on a daily? Give us some real everyday policy positions please."

"It looks that Stupidity runs in this family," an individual remarked, and another penned, "As usual Eric talking about the important issues for this country."

A user said, "F*****g DELUSIONAL."
