WASHINGTON, DC: In a startling development in the aftermath of his defamation trial, Rudy Giuliani, the former attorney for Donald Trump, reportedly finds himself estranged from his legal counsel Joseph D Sibley, as the Washington DC court mandates a staggering payment of nearly $148 million to two Georgia election workers he falsely implicated with election fraud in the 2020 presidential election.

CBS News' Scott MacFarlane first reported that Giuliani was not on talking terms and seemed distant in the courtroom with his attorney before a jury awarded three times the amount the plaintiffs Ruby Freeman and Wandrea 'Shaye' Moss were seeking.

"Giuliani and his attorney aren't speaking to each other. Not at all. They've pivoted in their chairs away from each other Giuliani appears to be taking notes with a marker. Moss & Freeman sit at a crowded plaintiff's table with five representatives. We await Judge Beryl Howell," MacFarlane wrote on X.

The federal court jury on December 15 ordered Giuliani to pay $73 million to compensate Ruby Freeman and Wandrea 'Shaye' Moss for the reputational and emotional damage they suffered when he baselessly accused them of helping rig votes for Joe Biden, and another $75 million to punish him for his conduct reported Reuters.

Who is Joseph D Sibley?

Sibley is a Texas-based attorney who earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School. According to the website of his firm, Camara & Sibley LLP, he specializes in complex commercial disputes, besides handling defamation cases.

According to a Business Insider report, Sibley was the only attorney representing Giuliani when the plaintiffs had 13 attorneys representing them. "That's because we're innocent," was his answer when asked why he has only one lawyer. "They have a thousand," Giuliani said to Business Insider.

Joseph D Sibley fails to convince jury

The defense lawyer was unsuccessful in convincing the jury presided over by Judge Beryl Howell, who previously ruled that the ex-Trump attorney was guilty of the charges. He caught himself in the whirlwind of a much-anticipated case, culminating in a whopping $148 million.

Sibley's attempts to portray his client as a "good man" also went in vain.

During the closing statement on December 14, as Giuliani backed out from testifying, the defense attorney said that the jury should take into consideration his client's entire career, adding that labeling Giuliani as a racist is "really a low blow".
