WASHINGTON, DC: James Comey, former Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) stated that Donald Trump is "begging" for a jail sentence.

Comey claimed that the former president's continued criticism of the judge and the court's process in the hush money case is tantamount to asking for a jail sentence, according to The Hill.

Speaking on CNN’s 'The Source with Kaitlan Collins', on Tuesday, June 4, Comey expressed his surprise at the potential for a jail sentence in Trump's case, which involves charges typically resulting in less severe punishments.

“I would ordinarily say it’s unlikely, in a white-collar offense of this sort. But this is a defendant who’s begging for a jail term by taking a flamethrower not just to the judge, but to the entire process and the jury,” said the former FBI director.

“A judge will take that very seriously into consideration, in deciding whether to deter this person, and to send a message, more broadly, he needs to spend some time behind bars,” he added.

Donald Trump's hush money case conviction

On May 30, Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business documents to conceal payments to former adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 elections.

The legal team of the 77-year-old politician whose sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 11 has vowed to appeal the case.

Trump repeatedly made remarks about Judge Juan Merchan, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and the jury through social media, campaign speeches, and while speaking to reporters, saying that the charges are politically motivated.

Donald Trump says the public won't accept his prison time

Trump recently stated that he would be "OK" with either house arrest or jail time, expressing doubt about public acceptance of such a sentence.

Judge Juan Merchan scheduled Trump's criminal trial to begin on April 15, which would make it the first criminal prosecution of a former American president. Trump was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records last year, which prosecutors say was an effort to hide a potential sex scandal, both before and after the 2016 election. In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, June 2, the former president said, “I’m not sure the public would stand for it."

“I think it’d be tough for the public to take. At a certain point, there’s a breaking point,” he added.

Internet doubles down on James Comey saying Donald Trump is begging for jail sentence

Reacting to Comey stating Trump's actions appear to convey he is begging for a jail sentence, a user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, "Because that’s how it goes…criticize and you’ll be jailed."

"Jail him, it only gets him more votes," a netizen commented while another user wrote, "Comey tried to overturn a legitimate election in 2016."

One user tweeted, "I thought we had something called the first amendment here in America? He should not even be under a gag order in the first place."
