WASHINGTON, DC: A viral claim suggests former President Barack Obama is secretly working with NATO leaders to counter President Donald Trump’s plans for the alliance. The post links Obama’s recent UK mansion purchase and asset transfers to a supposed 'shadow government' and even accuses him of a globalist coup. But is that true? Let’s fact-check the claim.

Claim: Barack Obama established a shadow government

A post shared by the X user JoshHall claimed that Barack Obama had been secretly working against President Trump. The post began by alleging that Obama had set up a shadow government, writing: "DISGRACED former President Barack Hussein Obama has reportedly established a 'back channel' and a shadow government to communicate directly with world leaders whose countries are a part of NATO, anticipating a possible Trump administration withdrawal from the alliance."

It further claimed that Obama had coordinated with international leaders to prepare for a potential US exit from NATO: "Obama is said to be reassuring his fellow leftist leaders and our so-called allies by forming a 'contingency plan' in the event that President Trump does in fact terminate our NATO membership."

The post then pointed to Obama’s personal moves as 'evidence' of a larger plot: "With Obama recently purchasing a MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR MANSION in The UK and transferring a large chunk of his assets to the country, it appears that he may be orchestrating a GLOBALIST COUP against President Trump and engaging in a CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY to undermine the foreign policy of our duly-elected President."

It concluded with a dramatic claim, stating: "If we had a dollar for every time that Barack Obama has committed TREASON, we'd be as rich as Elon Musk. This man is the worst thing that has ever happened to America? ARREST OBAMA NOW!"

The post also included an image showing Barack Obama standing alongside other leaders, including China’s President Xi Jinping and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Notably, it had received over 4,500 comments, 650K views, and more than 23,000 likes.

The claim that former President Barack Obama formed a secret shadow government has been circulating widely on social media, but there is no credible news reporting or official confirmation to support it. Searches on Google and other platforms show that the story originated from unverified social media rumors.

This false claim comes amid real tensions in 2026 between the US and NATO over Iran, including disagreements on military support and spending. President Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO allies for not fully backing US operations in Iran.

The NATO alliance has faced increasing strain, particularly over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. While some countries, including the United Kingdom, said they were 'ready to contribute' to reopening the strait, they resisted broader involvement in the conflict.

Trump called NATO a “paper tiger” and its members “cowards,” warning that the US might withdraw or impose economic consequences.

On Truth Social, he wrote: “You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us,” referring to countries that refused to join the Iran operation.
