WASHINGTON, DC: In January 2026, a rumor circulated online claiming that singer and actor Cher called President Donald Trump 'an a****e' and said he awakened 'bigotry and distrust' in America.

As per the rumor, the remarks were made by Cher about the POTUS during an interview wherein she also called Trump 'dangerous'. But is there any truth to this? Let us find out below.

Claim: Cher cursed Trump during a 2016 interview

A Facebook user made a post claiming that Cher, while speaking in an interview, allegedly said of Donald Trump, "He's an a**hole. He's so dangerous, and what he brings to my country, what he's awakened in my country, is bigotry and distrust and a certain kind of supremacy in certain groups. And he lies. He tells something, and then you go back and see what he said, and it seems like the truth both times."

"He's so terrific at lying, I've never seen anybody so good. I mean, it's just amazing. I could go on and on on this subject forever because I'm so traumatized by it," Cher added, as per the Facebook post.

The rumor further spread across different social media platforms, such as X, Instagram, Bluesky, and Reddit. A Bluesky post read, "Cher on Trump, 'He's an a**hole. He's so dangerous... He's awakened bigotry and distrust and a certain kind of supremacy... And he lies."

Similarly, an X user posted, "Cher attacks Trump, says he has 'awakened' bigotry, distrust, and supremacy in America."

Fact Check: Cher made the remarks during a 2016 NBC interview

The claims made in the online posts are true, as an NBC video posted on October 4, 2016, showed Cher making the statement during an appearance at an event for the youth leadership organization One Young World in Ottawa, Ontario, before Trump was elected to his first term as POTUS.

Moreover, On-Demand News, a YouTube news network powered by journalism company ITN, also posted the clip of Cher making the remarks.

Similarly, One Young World's website also included part of her quote in an archived article about her appearance at the 2016 event.

Several media outlets, such as The Independent, Huffpost, and The Telegraph in the UK, and the Australian Associated Press, included parts of Cher's alleged quote in their reports back in 2016.

As per reports in 2016, Cher was vocal about her dislike of Trump. CNN reported in August 2016 that she called Trump 'a f*****g idiot' during a campaign event for then Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton.
