Fact Check: Did Congress block Trump’s taxpayer funds over East Wing dispute?
WASHINGTON, DC: Rumors continue to spread online after President Donald Trump began demolishing the East Wing for renovation.
Now, a new claim is adding to the chatter. In November 2025, a social media post alleged that Congress had cut off Trump’s access to taxpayer funds until he paid the company supposedly hired to tear down the East Wing to make room for a new ballroom.
Claim: Congress blocked Trump’s access to all taxpayer funds
Trump began demolition work in late October to make room for a new ballroom. He told reporters the privately funded project would not affect the existing building, but construction crews eventually tore down the entire East Wing.
As the work continued, a Threads user posted a claim that read, “JUST IN: Congress Block Donald Trump's Access to All Taxpayer Funds After Federal Court Orders Him to Immediately Pay ACECO Demolition Company Their Owed Balance Plus $500,000 in Compensation Over the Ongoing White House East Wing Dispute.” Similar posts spread quickly on Facebook, Instagram, and X.
Although many people believed and shared the story. It circulated alongside an article stating, “The court ordered Trump to immediately pay ACECO Demolition Company the outstanding balance owed, plus an additional $500,000 in compensation, after determining that the administration unlawfully withheld payments related to the halted East Wing demolition project.”
The article concluded by saying, “The White House has not released an official statement, though sources close to the administration have described the internal atmosphere as ‘tense’ and ‘chaotic,’ with aides scrambling to assess next steps. Legal analysts say that unless Trump pays ACECO quickly, he could face additional penalties, including interest charges or potential seizure orders.”
Fact Check: False, Congress did not block Trump’s access to all taxpayer funds
Although the social media claim about President Donald Trump and the East Wing dispute went viral, and many people believed it, the claim is false for several reasons.
First, searches across multiple search engines for terms such as “ACECO Demolition Company lawsuit,” “East Wing demolition dispute,” “Congress freezes Trump taxpayer funds,” and “federal court orders Trump to pay ACECO” produced no credible results.
Second, no reputable news outlet has reported anything resembling the social media claims. Third, no official statements from ACECO, the White House, Congress, or any federal court confirmed that such actions occurred.
Additionally, the images included in the posts were found to be AI-generated. One photo showed Trump appearing twice, while another displayed the text “Demo Inc.,” which has no connection to the East Wing demolition. The article shared alongside the posts also appeared to have been created using AI.
