Fact Check: Did Donald Trump say, 'I will lie, cheat, & steal to get what I want'?
WASHINGTON, DC: Amid criticism of President Donald Trump and his administration over inflation, gas prices, and the Iran conflict, a viral social media post claimed that Trump admitted he had no morals, ethics, or integrity. The alleged quote quickly spread across multiple platforms, prompting mockery, debate, and speculation online.
The claim gained significant traction as users shared what appeared to be a direct statement from the president. Here's a closer look at where the quote originated and whether there is any evidence Trump ever made such a remark.
Claim: Donald Trump said he has no 'morals, ethics, or integrity'
According to the viral claim circulating on X, Trump allegedly said, "I am a man of no morals, no ethics & no integrity. I will lie, cheat, & steal to get what I want. I will take a stolen or second-hand Nobel Peace Prize and act like it is mine. My depravity and greed have no boundaries."
The claim has also spread on Facebook, Threads, and Instagram, garnering hundreds of thousands of views. While many users appeared to believe the quote was genuine, others questioned whether Trump had actually made the statement.
Fact Check: Donald Trump made no such remark
The quote is false. There are no records of Trump making such a statement about himself.
A Google search for the alleged quote produces no credible reports from major news organizations, something that would almost certainly exist had the president made such an extraordinary admission. Likewise, there is no evidence of the statement appearing on any of Trump's official social media accounts.
The fabricated quote gained traction amid renewed attention on tensions involving Iran following reports of a ceasefire being broken.
According to Grok, "The meme's text is satirical fiction and not a direct quote from Donald Trump; he has never publicly admitted or said 'I am a man of no morals, no ethics & no integrity' or similar self-damning statements."
It further stated, "Trump has repeatedly claimed high moral standing, denied wrongdoing in various scandals, and portrayed himself as a victim of unfair attacks rather than acknowledging deceit or greed.”
Donald Trump says his 'morality' limits his power
Earlier this year, Trump said that his own morality places limits on his authority.
The comment came after Trump, during his first year back in the White House, aggressively expanded executive authority by signing hundreds of executive orders aimed at reshaping federal policy, dismantling agencies, and bypassing legislation passed by Congress.
Trump made the remarks after CBS Evening News anchor Tony Dokoupil asked what constrained his authority over domestic policy.
Trump replied, "It's limited by my morality, and I have a very high grade of morality, so therefore it's limited."
