Fact Check: Did Donald Trump trade barbs with Vladimir Putin over sanctions?

WASHINGTON, DC: Amid the controversy after lifting several sanctions imposed on Russia, a rumor is circulating on social media platforms, claiming to show an exchange between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin over the sanctions. The claim has sparked questions from online users, prompting a fact-check.

Claim: Donald Trump had a heated exchange with Vladimir Putin

The claim surfaced on X, showing an exchange between the leaders of the two superpowers, with Trump threatening to impose sanctions on Russia.

"Vladimir, stop playing games with me! If you think you can stall peace deals, threaten NATO, or bypass our red lines without consequences, you're dead wrong. I will hit Russia with sanctions so brutal your entire economy will implode overnight," Trump allegedly said.

"Donald, spare me the bravado. Moscow does not bow to American threats, nor do we compromise on our core security. Pressurizing Russia with sanctions has failed for years, and it will fail again,” Putin allegedly replied.

Trump then went on to say, “Don't test my patience! I will flood global markets with American energy, crash oil prices to rock bottom, and crush your war chest before you even realize what hit you.”

Putin then hit back, stating, “Go ahead and try. Russian endurance is limitless—and if you push us into a corner, we will dismantle Western influence across every proxy line on earth.”

Fact Check: No such argument has taken place

The claim, however, is false, as no evidence suggests such a conversation took place where Trump threatened to reinstate the sanctions against Russia.

There are no publicly available statements, transcripts, press conferences, or social media posts that support the claim.

If such a conversation had really taken place between Trump and Putin, credible news outlets would have widely covered it, making headlines. A search on Google also yielded no media reports about such a heated exchange.

Moreover, the claim was posted by an X account called ‘American Force,’ which describes itself as ‘parody.’

Donald Trump defends Russia sanctions waiver.

The claim surfaced after Trump recently decided to waive major provisions of a new Russia sanctions package, arguing that imposing the restrictions could jeopardize negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. 

"My decision on Russia is a very simple one. I am in the process of negotiating Peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine, and don't want to do anything that will drive, foolishly, Russia away from the bargaining table," Trump wrote.

He added, "Great progress is being made, and that includes current hostage negotiations!"
