Claim: Elon Musk inquired about purchasing the UK

The rumor seemingly originated from an X post by Polymarket that read, "Breaking: Elon Musk inquires about purchasing the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland."

The post quickly received more than 1.3 million views and drew several reactions. Some users questioned whether Musk could actually buy an entire country.

One user asked Grok about the cost and political issues involved, while another simply asked, “Is this true?” Others questioned whether buying a country was even legally possible and whether such a deal could be profitable.

The post came as Musk continued to express his views on British politics. In recent months, he has posted about race and immigration in the UK on X.

An analysis of his posts, replies and reposts from May 31 to June 12 found that he discussed UK politics more often than SpaceX, the company he also owns, during the period leading up to its initial public offering.

Fact Check: False, the post originated as satire

The claim is false. An X Community Note explains that Musk jokingly responded to a post from the Babylon Bee, a satire website, by asking how much the UK costs. Presenting his joke as a formal inquiry to buy the country is misleading.

The rumor began after the Babylon Bee published a satirical article on August 11 titled “Elon Musk Buys The United Kingdom To Establish Free Speech There.” The website is known for publishing satire and fake news for comedic purposes. Musk replied to the post, “How much is it?”

There is no evidence that Musk made a formal inquiry, offer, or serious proposal to purchase the UK. A private individual also cannot simply buy a sovereign country. There is no legal process under UK or international law that would allow someone to purchase the United Kingdom.

Musk's history of turning jokes about buying companies into reality may have made the post seem more believable. In 2017, he replied “How much is it?” to a suggestion that he buy Twitter. Five years later, he acquired the social media company for $44 billion.
