WASHINGTON, DC: A bizarre claim about Elon Musk has caught the attention of social media users, with viral posts suggesting that the billionaire wants to launch a dating app that helps people pay off their debts.

The alleged app would allow users to upload their unpaid bills and match with wealthy strangers willing to cover their expenses, much like finding a match on Tinder. The idea has sparked curiosity and humorous reactions online, especially as many people struggle with rising living costs.

Claim: Elon Musk proposed a debt-paying dating app

Viral posts on X have shared a screenshot allegedly showing Elon Musk suggesting an app where people can upload their unpaid bills and wealthy strangers can choose to pay them, similar to how users find matches on Tinder.

The image shows Musk smiling in a black tuxedo, along with a screenshot of a supposed tweet from his X account (@elonmusk). The alleged post reads, “Making an app where you upload your bills and bored billionaires swipe right to pay them.”

Large white text at the bottom of the image repeats the claim, stating that Musk has proposed an app where people can list their bills and debts for wealthy strangers to pay.

The post presents the idea as an official proposal from Musk and has attracted significant attention, receiving thousands of likes, hundreds of reposts and replies, and hundreds of thousands of views.

However, the idea first appeared as a joke in an October 22 post by another X user, who wrote, “There should be an app where you upload your bills and bored billionaires swipe right to pay them.”

Fact Check: The idea appeared as a joke

The claim is false. Although viral posts suggest that Elon Musk proposed a dating app where wealthy strangers could pay people's debts, there is no evidence he made such an announcement. Searches of his X account also show no post matching the viral message.

The screenshot shared online is fabricated and edited. It began circulating on November 1 and 2, making it appear as though Musk had posted the idea from his official account.

The idea actually started as a joke by an ordinary X user on October 22. The user suggested creating an app where people could upload their unpaid bills and wealthy billionaires could swipe right to pay them.

Although X Money offers payment services, it does not have a feature that allows billionaires to swipe through people's debts and choose which ones to pay.

The joke also inspired independent developers to create similar projects. One example is PayMyBillionaires.com, a website that clearly states it has no connection to Elon Musk, X, or any billionaire. Another project, called OnlyBills, was scheduled to launch on the App Store on November 11, 2026.

These are independent projects inspired by the viral joke. They have no connection to Musk, xAI, or X.

Therefore, the screenshot claiming that Musk proposed the debt-paying dating app is fake. The idea began as a joke on social media and later inspired others to develop similar projects.
