LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Following the release of a new wave of documents related to convicted offender Jeffrey Epstein, a rumor is circulating on social media that rapper Jay-Z had left the country after his name appeared in the files released by the Justice Department on Friday. Let us examine the origins of the rumor and fact-check the viral claim.

Claim: Jay-Z fled the US after his name appeared on Epstein files

According to the viral claims, Shawn Carter, also known as Jay-Z, has fled the US after his name appeared in the documents linked to the convicted offender.

Although Jay-Z’s name was not found in personal messages, it appeared in public call records made to the FBI in 2019.

The document noted “she later awoke in the presence of Harvey Weinstein and Shawn Carter while Weinstein had inserted his fingers…”

Fact Check: False, the claim originated as a parody

However, there is no evidence that the rapper and Beyoncé’s husband has fled the country to an undisclosed location.

A search on Google does not generate appropriate results supporting the claim. If the claim were true, it would have been widely covered by credible news media outlets.

Moreover, the rumor emerged from a post on X by the account called Hoops Crave, which describes itself as a parody account that often posts such claims for the sake of engagement.

The post, which was published on Sunday, February 1, has garnered more than seventeen million views and two hundred thousand likes. Hence, it is likely that this post is the root cause of the viral rumor.

Grok also fact-checked the rumors, saying, “As of February 1, 2026, Jay-Z's current location isn't publicly confirmed. Some reports claim he left the US amid unverified Epstein file mentions (anonymous tips, no charges), but details remain speculative."

"No public events scheduled in the next two weeks; his Roc Nation produces the Super Bowl halftime on February 8, headlined by Bad Bunny.”

The claim came following the release of millions of additional pages of records connected to Epstein on Friday by the Department of Justice.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said the release also included more than 2,000 videos and 180,000 images.

The decision came after weeks of criticism that the department was not following a federal law passed in November, which required all Epstein-related files to be made public by December 19.

Among the documents were emails from 2012 to 2013 that showed Elon Musk’s name, although his email address was redacted.
