WASHINGTON, DC: A new claim on social media alleges that former Rep. Liz Cheney had a months-long affair with Rep. Jamie Raskin, and that the alleged relationship led to her husband's divorce filing.
The post also claims the two lawmakers formed the House committee that investigated the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack to hide the alleged affair. The claims have sparked attention online, but what is the evidence behind them?

An X post by @larry_mcwethy claims that former Rep. Liz Cheney had a months-long affair with Rep. Jamie Raskin.
The post alleged that the relationship led to Cheney's husband filing for divorce and claimed that Cheney and Raskin formed the January 6 committee to hide their alleged relationship.
The X user wrote, “Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney's husband has filed for divorce after the sordid details of her ‘months-long tryst’ with Congressman Jamie Raskin came out in discovery in a lawsuit against the January 6 Unselect Committee.”
The post further claimed, “According to filed documents, Raskin and Cheney conspired to form the committee to hide their relationship, spending countless hours alone together ‘investigating’ the Nancy Pelosi op.”
The post also claimed that Cheney, who it said is worth $180 million because of her late father's defense contractor holdings, could lose half of her wealth under Wyoming law. It concluded by claiming that Raskin was facing similar problems in his marriage.
The post received more than 630,000 views within hours of being published and drew several comments questioning whether the claims were authentic.
Fact Check: The post originated as satire
The claim is false. Satire and troll sources created the rumor, and no court records, credible news reports, or official documents support it. Liz Cheney remains married to Philip Perry.
The couple married in 1993 and have five children. Reliable biographical sources and media profiles continue to list them as married, with no credible reports of a divorce filing.
There is also no evidence that Cheney had an affair or romantic relationship with Rep. Jamie Raskin. Raskin remains married to Sarah Bloom Raskin.
No court filings, discovery documents, or credible news reports support claims about an alleged affair, a conspiracy to create the January 6 committee to hide a relationship, or any related lawsuit revelations.
Similar versions of the rumor have circulated previously, including earlier in 2026. Fact checks and community notes have identified the claims as fabrications.
The rumor traces back to ALLOD, or America's Last Line of Defense, a self-described satire and troll network that states that its content is not real. The claims later circulated on social media without clear satire labels, causing some users to treat them as factual.
The claim that Cheney is worth $180 million because of her late father's defense contractor holdings is also unsupported. Public estimates place her net worth much lower, generally around $15 million to $20 million.
While her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, accumulated significant wealth, including through his association with Halliburton, there is no credible evidence that Cheney herself has a $180 million fortune or that she would automatically lose half of it under Wyoming law.
