DEARBORN, MICHIGAN: A viral social media claim in July 2026 alleged that Muslims in Dearborn, Michigan, demanded that churches stop ringing their bells on Sundays, sparking a heated online debate. The claim resurfaced amid renewed attention to the city's past discussions over religious sound ordinances. Let's fact-check the claim.

Claim: Muslims in Michigan demand churches stop ringing bells on Sunday

A Facebook post spreading the claim stated, "Muslims in Dearborn, Michigan Demand Churches Stop Ringing Bells on Sunday: 'This is a Muslim-majority town, and you have to respect us. According to Sharia, church bells cannot be louder than our Islamic call to prayer.' Churches ringing bells is a longstanding American tradition — now being challenged in their own country."

The post included an image of a group of Coptic Christian clerics in Egypt, even though it was presented alongside the claim about Dearborn. Versions of the rumor also spread widely on X, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Threads.

The viral posts triggered heated reactions in the comments, with many users believing the claim and expressing outrage.

One user wrote, "You have to respect the law of the land you are living in. Sharia law is not United States law. No religion can ever run the government in the USA. You have the freedom to practice Sharia law personally as long as it doesn't interfere with government laws."

Another commenter said, "Ring the sounds out of those bells. Old wives' tales say the bells are ringing because demons can't stand the sound."

Fact Check: False, no evidence supports the claim

The rumor spread only through social media posts. None of the posts identified who supposedly made the demand, which church was affected, when the incident happened, or where the quoted statement came from.

No credible local news reports, city records, or public statements support the claim. Instead, local reporting pointed to a different issue involving complaints about mosque loudspeakers. Therefore, the claim is false.

The rumor appears to have stemmed from a real but unrelated dispute in Dearborn. Local news reports showed that some residents complained about mosque loudspeakers broadcasting the Islamic call to prayer. City officials responded by enforcing Dearborn's standard noise ordinance.

However, none of the reports said Muslims demanded that churches stop ringing their bells.

Dearborn's noise ordinance also contradicts the claim. The city's rules ban "unreasonably loud, disturbing, unusual or unnecessary noise" that affects other people's comfort, peace, health, or safety. The ordinance does not mention Sharia, Islam, mosques, churches, or church bells.

The social media posts also described Dearborn as a "Muslim-majority town," but no official government data on residents' religion supports that claim.
