WASHINGTON, DC: A viral claim on social media alleges that former President Barack Obama accepted a $22.9 million donation from the Venezuelan government to build a private apartment atop his presidential library.

The claim began doing rounds online in the days after President Donald Trump announced to the world that Qatar offered the Department of Defense a "gift" of a $400 million luxury Boeing 747-8 to be remodeled into a temporary Air Force One.

Claim: Barack Obama received a $22.9 million donation from Venezuela when he was president

The rumor began circulating in May 2025 and was widely shared across platforms like Facebook. One particularly popular post came from the America's Last Line of Defense Facebook page.

The post featured a photo of Obama with the caption, “While Barack Obama was in office, the Venezuelan Government ‘donated’ $22.9 million to build an apartment for his personal use on top of his Presidential Library. Not one Democrat batted an eye.” The post also claimed Bill Clinton received a 1999 Porsche from “the President of Unified Germany.”

Fact Check: There's no proof Barack Obama received a $22.9 million donation from Venezuela

There is absolutely no credible evidence to support the claim that former President Barack Obama received $22.9 million from the Venezuelan government to build a private apartment or for any other purpose.

In fact, the page responsible for the post, America's Last Line of Defense, openly describes its content as satirical. Its bio states, “The flagship of the ALLOD network of trollery and propaganda for cash. Nothing on this page is real.” The post itself was marked with a small “S” in the corner, indicating it was satire.

Searches across Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo turn up no credible news reports supporting the claim. There are also no public records or disclosures indicating any such donation was made.

Fact-checking outlet Snopes contacted a representative from Obama’s office, who confirmed that the story was entirely fictional.

The claim also falls apart on a basic factual level. According to its official website, the Barack Obama Presidential Library is “the first fully digital Presidential library.”

That means there’s no physical structure where an apartment could be added.

Qatar's $400 million Boeing jet gift to Donald Trump

Donald Trump claimed that Qatar was aware of Boeing's delay in delivering the new Air Force One and offered to help. “They said, ‘We would like to do something,’” he recalled while explaining why Qatar made the offer of such a luxurious gift.

“So if we can get a 747 as a contribution to our Defense Department to use during a couple of years while they’re building the other ones, I think that was a very nice gesture,” he said while delivering remarks at the White House.

Both the White House and Qatari officials clarified that the plane would be given to the US Defense Department, not to Trump directly.

This is not the first time satirical claims from America’s Last Line of Defense have been misinterpreted as factual. Similar fake stories have falsely alleged that Clinton received a $17 million helicopter from Saudi Arabia or that Al Gore was gifted a $90 million private jet.
