MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN: A viral video claiming to show newly released dashcam footage of former NFL quarterback Tony Romo's arrest has spread widely across social media, with many users believing it captures him failing field sobriety tests during a police stop. The clip gained traction after reports of Romo's recent arrest, prompting viewers to question whether authorities had made the footage public. Let's fact-check the claim.

Claim: Tony Romo's arrest video has been released by police

The X post by @TheChadLedger claims to show dashcam footage from Tony Romo's OWI arrest.

This comes after authorities arrested Tony Romo on July 23, 2026, in Milwaukee on suspicion of a first-offense OWI after he reportedly performed poorly on standardized field sobriety tests.

Police later booked and released him, and he is scheduled to appear in court on September 21. Romo was in Wisconsin to compete in the Wisconsin Amateur Golf Championship. Under Wisconsin law, a first-offense OWI is generally treated as a civil violation punishable by a $150 to $300 fine, rather than a criminal offense.

The alleged video shows a nighttime roadside scene filmed from inside a vehicle. It features a man wearing a cowboy hat and vest stumbling through field sobriety tests while a casually dressed woman watches and interacts with him.

On-screen captions exaggerate his mistakes with phrases such as "STEP, BUMP! STEP," "KICK BALL," and "FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT" as he sways, kicks, and nearly falls beside a light blue pickup truck.

Fact Check: False, no evidence supports the claim

The claim that police released dashcam footage of Tony Romo's arrest is false. The viral video is not connected to Romo's July 23, 2026, OWI arrest.

Instead, it is an old Comedy Central comedy sketch featuring an intoxicated person humorously failing field sobriety tests.

No credible news outlet covering Romo's arrest has reported or published any dashcam footage. Official reports describe a routine traffic stop and field sobriety tests but make no mention of publicly released video.

Several details further disprove the claim. The clip originated years before Romo's arrest, with a tweet dating back to 2019, and its Comedy Central branding confirms it is recycled entertainment content.

The people and setting shown in the video, including a man wearing a cowboy hat, a light blue pickup truck, a female observer, and exaggerated comedic behavior, do not match the known circumstances of Romo's arrest on Interstate 43 after he attended the Wisconsin Amateur Golf Championship.

Most notably, the video ends with a fade to black-and-white, followed by the Comedy Central logo and the text "#COMEDYTBT" and "NOW BACK TO THE PRESENT."

These on-screen elements clearly identify the footage as a comedy sketch rather than authentic police dashcam footage from Romo's arrest.
