WASHINGTON, DC: Amid the Trump administration’s recent geographic name-changing spree over the trade wars with Canada, an allegation has been circulating on social media platforms claiming that President Donald Trump, in a social media post, announced renaming the Panama Canal to the ‘Trump Shortcut.’ The claim has prompted a fact-check.
Claim: Panama Canal renamed to 'Trump Shortcut'
The rumor spread with a screenshot claiming to show a post by Trump on his official Truth Social account.
The alleged post read, “Effective immediately, the Panama Canal will officially be known as THE TRUMP SHORTCUT! Jimmy Carter gave away the greatest engineering masterpiece in history for ZERO DOLLARS-an unbelievable failure by a low-IQ administration!"
"But we built it, we paid for it, and we are taking back the naming rights! From now on, every ship passing through will know they are traveling through pure American greatness!"
"We are saving millions of miles and billions of dollars with the ultimate shortcut-printed on high-end gold signs at both ends! PANAMA SHOULD BE SAYING THANK YOU!”
The purported post ended by stating, “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
While many appeared to believe the screenshot to be an authentic post by Trump, others dismissed it as fake and called for a fact-check.
Fact Check: No such post exists on Trump's social media
The screenshot, however, is fake and fabricated, as no such post exists on any of the president’s social media accounts.
A search of his official Truth Social handle, as well as commentary accounts on X that automatically archive all his posts, yielded no results that match the text in the screenshot.
If Trump really made such an announcement, it would not have gone unreported in prominent news outlets. A Google search for the claim also yielded no such news reports.
Additionally, the screenshot originated from a Facebook parody account called ‘Mrs. Putin’ and includes several indications of fabrication, such as a watermark stating ‘satire’ and the username stated as ‘@realDotardTrump,’ while his actual username is ‘@realDonaldTrump.’

The claim is based on the Trump administration’s recent geographic name-changing orders amid tensions with Canada over increased tariffs, including an executive order directing the federal government to use “Gulf of America” instead of the Gulf of Mexico and renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”
“As you know, we took something called the Gulf of Mexico, we changed it, and now it's very routinely the Gulf of America,” Trump said.
