WASHINGTON, DC: Amid the escalating tensions between the United States and Canada over the tariff war, a rumor is circulating online claiming that President Donald Trump posted on his social media platform about buying shares of ‘Canadian Tire’ and renaming it ‘American Tire.’ The claim has triggered mockery and speculation, requiring a fact-check.

The rumor spread as a screenshot on X, claiming to show a post by the president on his official Truth Social handle, wherein he stated buying shares of ‘Canadian Tire,’ a Canadian retail corporation.

The alleged post reads, “The store called 'Canadian Tire' north of the border sells 100% American products. For this reason, I have bought most of its shares and renamed it ‘American Tire’. Thank you for your attention in this matter!”

The claim has been widely shared and amplified by several accounts, with many claiming it to be an authentic post by Trump, sparking mockery and concern over escalating trade wars between the two nations.

Fact Check: Donald Trump made no such post

The claim, however, is false, as there is no evidence of the president making such a post about buying the shares of the corporation.

A search on Trump’s official handle for the post yielded no results that match the text in the screenshot. There is also no trace of the post in the commentary accounts on X that automatically archive all his Truth Social posts.

If Trump had really posted the claim and then deleted it, prominent news outlets would have widely covered it. A search on Google returned no results either.

Moreover, the fake screenshot was posted by an X account called ‘Mark Carney’s Ego’ which describes itself in the bio as ‘Parody of the Prime Minister of Canada.’

The claim surfaced amid the Trump administration’s recent geographic naming-changing spree as part of the trade war with Canada.

The name changes include an executive order directing the federal government to use “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico” and renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”

“As you know, we took something called the Gulf of Mexico, we changed it, and now it's very routinely the Gulf of America,” Trump said.

Trump also suggested that he would eventually rename the Atlantic and Pacific oceans as well.
