WASHINGTON, DC: After President Donald Trump announced a dividend for all Americans if the Republicans won the 2026 midterms, a rumor began circulating online claiming that Trump said Iran would send $5000 to each American to apologize for the rising gas prices. The claim sparked mockery and criticism against Trump, requiring a fact-check of the rumor.

Claim: Iran to give $5000 to each American to apologize for gas prices

The claim appeared as a post on X, according to which Trump claimed that he’s “very close” to a deal with Iran in which the Islamic Republic will send every American a $5,000 check to apologize for the higher gas prices.

The post has garnered thousands of views, with many criticizing the president and many believing the claim is true. A few others dismissed it as fake and exaggerated, calling for a fact-check into the rumor.

Fact Check: The claim originated as satire

Although the president did announce a $ 5,000 dividend for Americans if the GOP won the midterm election, there is no evidence of him announcing that Iran will pay that amount to apologise for rising gas prices.

There are no official statements, announcements, press coverage, or social media posts from Trump or the White House that support the claim.

If Trump had made such an announcement, prominent news outlets would not have missed it, given the pressure on the Trump administration ahead of the November elections.

But a search on Google for the claim yielded no credible news reports, except for the social media posts amplifying the claim.

Additionally, the claim was posted by an X account called ‘The Halfway Post,’ which describes itself in the bio as ‘half true’ and ‘satire.’

The claim was based on Trump’s proposal to give $5,000 to every American if Republicans won the upcoming midterm election, which he said would be a return tied to the country’s economic success. 

"Here is my promise: If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them, because of our tremendous economic success, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000," Trump said.
