Fact Check: Is Candace Owens under FBI investigation for ties to the Russian government?
WASHINGTON, DC: Amid her visit to St Petersburg, a claim began circulating on social media platforms that political commentator Candace Owens is under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for her alleged ties to the Russian government. Let us analyze and fact-check the claim.
Claim: FBI is probing Candace Owens for alleged Russian ties
The claim originated after a user posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Candace Owens is deeply panicking about being under investigation for being dog walked by the Russian government.”
The user further alleged, “According to Candy, she thinks she can meet with Russian government officials and propagandists with zero recourse.”
The post was accompanied by a screenshot showing a tweet by Candace about an FBI probe alongside a Google result on bipolar auditory hallucinations, referencing claims by Laura Loomer that the FBI is "looking into it."
While many appeared to believe the claim to be real, others dismissed it as fake.
Fact Check: No official statement or announcement from the FBI
The claim, however, is false, as there is no evidence, such as official statements or announcements from the FBI, about a probe against Owens. Also, Owens’ tweet about the FBI probe was sarcastic, and Loomer’s claim is unverified.
A search on Google for the claim yielded no relevant results by prominent news media outlets about the claim, which, if true, would have been widely covered.
A fact check by Grok confirmed, “There is no confirmed or publicly verified FBI investigation into Candace Owens related to her attendance at Russia's SPIEF 2026 forum, meetings with Russian officials, or possible FARA violations."
"Laura Loomer claimed on X that she was ‘told the FBI is looking into it,’ but this remains an unverified allegation with no supporting evidence from official FBI statements, DOJ announcements, or credible reporting.”
Candace Owens draws backlash after Russian trip
Owens was part of a small group of Americans who flew in as the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, or SPIEF, often dubbed Russian Davos, opened on June 3 in the port city, after which she was accused of spreading Russian propaganda.
On social media, Owens shared photos of Moscow and called it “a magnificent city,” brushing off criticism of her visit. While at the economic forum, she talked about the importance of traditional family values and the role of women in the family.
