The claim has sparked shock and outrage, prompting a fact-check.
Claim: Mitch McConnell is dead
The claim was triggered by a viral video that surfaced this month, which claimed that McConnell died and that his body was secretly taken to the Kentucky State Coroner’s Office under police escort.
The viral clip showed a flag-draped gurney, with police officers saluting and roads being blocked in Louisville.
The video also pointed out text messages, social media posts, a statement from the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), and the fact that the procession stopped near a building that also houses the Kentucky State Coroner’s Office.
The video has spread on Facebook, X, and TikTok, garnering millions of views, sparking conspiracy theories and outrage from online users, who are questioning the claim’s authenticity.
Fact Check: False, viral video shows procession for a fallen police officer
The claim, however, is false, as the procession in the video had nothing to do with McConnell and is, in fact, a procession for a fallen police officer, not a secret funeral.
His office has not announced his death as of this writing, and according to the latest official update, the senator is recovering in a rehabilitation facility after suffering a fall in June.
The creator of the video, which was posted on TikTok, also later acknowledged that the claim was untrue.
The video also does not match normal procedures, as the death of a senator would not be handled through the Kentucky State Coroner’s Office.
If the claim were true, it would have been widely covered by credible news media outlets, making headlines.
Questions over Mitch McConnell's health
Last month, the Republican Senator's office was faced with renewed scrutiny after top aides were unable to answer fresh questions about McConnell's health when his absence from public view had reached 40 days.
According to a July 24 report by the Daily Beast, the 84-year-old had not been seen publicly since his hospitalization on June 14.
His office released a hospital photograph on July 12, showing McConnell alongside his wife, Elaine Chao, which was accompanied by a statement saying that he would not return to the Senate because of a fall and a mild case of pneumonia.
