WASHINGTON, DC: Senator Mitch McConnell recently said that he has left a rehabilitation center and will continue intensive therapy at home during the Senate recess. He also said he will continue working on Senate matters remotely with his staff and colleagues.

The update has raised questions online about how McConnell will handle his Senate duties while recovering at home. His office has not shared new photos or videos of his condition. So, is McConnell really working on Senate matters from home after leaving rehab?

Claim: Mitch McConnell plans to handle Senate business from home

An X user highlighted a report about Mitch McConnell’s statement after leaving rehab and claimed, "BREAKING a Mitch McConnell now plans to handle Senate business from his home.."

The post led other X users to question whether McConnell could actually handle Senate business while recovering at home. One user criticized the media coverage and wrote, "Has anyone else noticed the media complicity? They report Mitch McConnell says he's working from home for a couple of months. Mitch McConnell didn't say s**t. This is a clown show."

Another user questioned whether McConnell would personally handle his duties while working remotely, writing, "I am pretty sure it will be the auto pen working not mitch mcconnell."

A third user questioned whether McConnell should continue in office if he cannot perform his duties in person. The user wrote, "This is completely unacceptable. If the duties of the office can’t be performed in person, the seat should be filled by someone who can."

Fact Check: True

The claim is true. Mitch McConnell is handling Senate work from home while he continues his recovery. His office released a statement on August 6, 2026, confirming that he had left a rehabilitation center and would continue his recovery at home.

In the statement, McConnell said he would “maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business.”

Several credible news outlets have reported the same statement. The “state work period” refers to the Senate’s August recess, when the chamber is not holding regular floor votes.

McConnell, 84, has not sought reelection and has been absent from the Senate since a fall at home in mid-June 2026 left him briefly unconscious.

He later developed pneumonia and moved to a rehabilitation center. He has not made a public appearance since his hospitalization.

His statement confirms that he will work with his staff and Senate colleagues from home while he recovers during the recess.

However, it does not say that he will cast Senate floor votes remotely or perform all of his duties from home indefinitely. Senate floor votes generally require senators to be physically present.
