WASHINGTON, DC: Sen Mitch McConnell has returned home after spending several weeks in a rehabilitation facility following a sudden health scare.

The Kentucky Republican said on Thursday, August 6, that he has been discharged and will continue recovering at home, where doctors have advised him to undergo intensive physical therapy.

McConnell also said he plans to remain involved in Senate business while lawmakers are away from Washington during the state work period.

In a statement released by his office, he said his recovery will continue with a demanding physical therapy schedule at home.

“Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home,” McConnell said in a statement.

He thanked those who had contacted him during his recovery, including friends, colleagues, and people in Kentucky, while also acknowledging the medical professionals who cared for him.

“Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians,” McConnell said, adding that he was thankful for the care provided by doctors, nurses, therapists and hospital staff.

The senator indicated that leaving the rehabilitation center does not mark the end of his recovery.

Instead, he is moving into another phase of treatment, with his doctors recommending continued physical therapy from home.

Mitch McConnell to remain 'engaged' with work

McConnell also sought to signal that he intends to remain engaged with his work despite the limitations imposed by his recovery.

“On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period,” he said.

McConnell's move home comes as questions remain about when he will be able to resume his normal schedule in Washington.

Last month, questions about Mitch McConnell’s health intensified after his office struggled to address inquiries during his absence from public view.

A July 24 report noted he had not been seen since his June 14 hospitalization.

His office later released a July 12 hospital photo with his wife, Elaine Chao, saying he would remain away from the Senate following a fall and mild pneumonia.
