Fact Check : Is photo of Donald and Melania Trump frowning real?

WASHINGTON, DC: A photograph of US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump staring at the camera with serious expressions has drawn online attention. The image has sparked questions about when and where it was taken and whether it accurately captures the couple's expressions.

Claim: An image showing Trump and Melania frowning goes viral 

In September 2026, an image circulated on social media that appeared to show US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump staring at the camera with frowning expressions. 

One X post shared the image with the caption, “For just a moment, the world saw their true nature. This is a real photo.” The image was also shared on Reddit and Threads.

The post sparked debate over whether the photograph was real. Some users questioned who took the picture and whether media access restrictions at the time made it possible to take such a photograph. 

Others suspected that the image was AI-generated or digitally edited, while some simply dismissed it as fake. 

Comments included claims such as “it’s AI,” “prove it’s not AI-generated,” and references to Photoshop. The mixed reactions led to questions about the image's origin and authenticity.

Fact Check: An image showing Trump and Melania is real

The image is authentic, but it was cropped from a wider photograph.

The original image was taken by Getty photographer Chip Somodevilla on September 24, 2026, during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the US.

It shows Trump and Melania alongside Xi and Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan after they watched a Silent Drill Platoon performance at the White House. The image drew attention online because of the Trumps’ frowning expressions.

However, it is unclear why they appeared to be frowning at that particular moment. Somodevilla’s Getty caption says the group had just watched the military demonstration from a White House balcony.

It also notes that Trump was hosting Xi for a three-day state visit, during which the leaders were expected to discuss trade, artificial intelligence and “strategic stability” between the two countries.

A nearly identical photograph taken by Reuters photographer Evan Vucci is also available through Reuters Connect. That image shows Trump, Melania and Xi on the same balcony, while wider versions also include Peng Liyuan. Another photograph from the same moment shows the four watching the military demonstration.

Somodevilla also took another photograph a few seconds later. In that image, Trump and Melania's frowns appear less pronounced than they do in the photograph that circulated on social media.
