NUUK, GREENLAND: Amid tensions over President Donald Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland from Denmark, a video has been circulating on social media with the claim that most Greenlanders are praising the president.
The video went viral with the claim that 78% Greenlanders want to join America.
Let us fact-check the claim.
Claim: Video shows Greenlanders wanting to join America
The viral video with almost a million views was posted by Trump supporter Bill Mitchell on Tuesday, January 20.
The video shows Greenlanders with Make America Great Again (MAGA) hats expressing interest in being part of America and voicing support of Trump’s interest in buying the island territory.
The video was accompanied by a caption stating, “MSM claims Greenlanders hate Trump - total BS!”
“Video straight from Greenland shows folks rocking MAGA hats, shouting ‘God bless you' and ‘He's the greatest on earth.’ They're fed up with Denmark's raw deal, craving US protection and better healthcare.”
“Poll hits 78% wanting to join America. Trump's vision is winning hearts - time to make Greenland great again.”
Fact Check: The video is old, and Greenlanders don't want to join America
The video in the viral social media post is old.
The clip is from the time Donald Trump Jr’s visit to the region in January 2025, weeks after his father said he wanted the US to take control of the autonomous Danish territory.
An investigation by The Guardian showed that Greenlanders were given a free lunch to attend the lunch hosted by Donald Jr in the capital, Nuuk.
In fact, the people wearing MAGA caps, were not dedicated supporters of Trump, but homeless people.
The claim that 78% Greenlanders want to join America is also unsubstantiated, as the polls contradict the claim.
A survey conducted last year by Verian in Denmark for Berlingske and Sermitsiaq showed that 85% of Greenlanders do not want to leave the Realm and become part of the United States, while 6% want to leave the Danish Realm and become part of the United States, and the remaining 9% are undecided.
Most Americans disapprove of Donald Trump's effort to acquire Greenland
According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll published on January 15, just 17% of Americans approve of Trump's efforts to acquire Greenland, and substantial majorities of Democrats and Republicans oppose using military force to annex the island.
The two-day poll, which concluded on Tuesday, showed widespread concerns over Trump's threats to NATO ally Denmark over Greenland, which has been a Danish territory for centuries.
