NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Amid the disagreements between the United States and Israel over Iran, a rumor is circulating on social media platforms claiming that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is more popular among US Jews than Donald Trump or Benjamin Netanyahu, sparking speculation. Let us analyze and fact-check the claim.
Claim: American Jews favor Zohran Mamdani over Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu
According to the viral rumor circulating on social media platforms, a new poll finds that Mamdani is more popular among Jewish Americans than President Trump or Netanyahu, sparking mixed reactions from online users.
The claim has spread on several platforms such as Facebook, X, and Instagram, garnering hundreds of thousands of views.
While many appeared to believe the claim to be true, few others dismissed it as false and questioned the authenticity of the viral claim, prompting a fact check.
Fact Check: True, latest poll shows Jews favour Zohran Mamdani
The claim is indeed true after a survey by AP-NORC, conducted among Jews based in the US, concluded that they favored Mamdani over Trump and the Israeli Prime Minister.
The survey studied the views of 1,022 Jewish adults held between June 11 and June 17, after which the study showed that a significant number of respondents favored Mamdani despite his stance on Israel.
It found that around 44 percent of American Jews like the Social Democrat, while 39 percent of them don't prefer him.
Meanwhile, when asked about Netanyahu, only 32 percent of them were in favor of the Israeli leader, while around 59 percent of them don't view him positively.
However, the polls reflect the opinions of a specific group of respondents at a particular moment; hence, they can’t be treated as an objective indicator.
Zohran Mamdani's views on Israel
The poll results favoured Mamdani despite his views on Israel, which were questioned in the media, after which he received criticism for asserting that he does not support nations that privilege one religion over another, such as Israel.
Last year, while speaking on Fox 5's Good Day New York, Mamdani refused to support Israel as a "Jewish state."
In June this year, Mamdani also snubbed a parade honoring Israel in NYC, after which he stated that he had already shared his thoughts on attending the Israel Day parade and was unwilling to be part of it. However, the mayor did wish for the parade to be conducted "peacefully."
