Fact Check: Will Tom Cruise play Superior Iron Man in 'Avengers: Doomsday'?
BURBANK, CALIFORNIA: Ahead of the release of the much-awaited ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ a rumor is circulating on social media platforms claiming that the film’s directors, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, have confirmed that Tom Cruise is playing Superior Iron Man in the film. The claim has sparked fan frenzy and speculation, requiring a fact-check.
Claim: Tom Cruise appearing as Superior Iron Man in 'Avengers: Doomsday'
According to a viral post on X, the Russo Brothers have confirmed that Tom Cruise has been cast as Superior Iron Man in Avengers: Doomsday.
The post was accompanied by an image of Cruise, along with a graphical image of the character.
The post has garnered more than a hundred thousand views as of this writing. It drew mixed reactions from Marvel fans and online users, with some appearing to be excited by the purported casting, while others appeared to disapprove.
Meanwhile, a few others remained skeptical, questioning the authenticity of the claim and calling for a fact-check.
Fact Check: Russo Brothers made no such announcement
The claim, however, is false, as there are no credible reports that say the ‘Mission: Impossible’ actor will be part of the upcoming film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Neither the directors nor the producers have made a mention of Cruise in the recent promotional events, including the San Diego Comic Con, where the film’s exclusive footage was revealed.
A search on Google for the claim yielded no relevant results from prominent news or entertainment media outlets that support the claim.
Additionally, ‘Chaos Crave,’ the X account that posted the claim, described itself in the bio as ‘Satirical news account.’
Although Cruise was once considered for the role of Iron Man, it later went to Robert Downey Jr.
Kevin Feige unveils 'Avengers: Doomsday' preview
The claim surfaced after producer Kevin Feige surprised attendees at San Diego Comic-Con by unveiling exclusive footage from the film, which was shown only to fans inside Hall H.
The film, which is set for release on December 18, will bring together the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and several other Marvel heroes. The studio began building anticipation last December by releasing four teaser trailers for the highly anticipated film.
The cast includes Robert Downey Jr as the villain Doctor Doom, alongside Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, and Simu Liu.
