Fans 'miss' Meg Ryan as she reveals what Nora Ephron taught her about rom-coms on Seth Meyers' show
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Actress and director Meg Ryan took center stage on 'Late Night with Seth Meyers' to discuss her latest project, 'What Happens Later', which she wrote and directed.
The film, which was released on November 3, prompted an engaging conversation about its inception, challenges faced during filming, and insights into her directorial journey.
Crafting the film from play's draft to financing
Ryan shared her unexpected journey of crafting the film, initially based on a play's first draft.
She shared, "It was during Covid, and I had a lot of time, and I just started writing, and I kept writing and I kept writing. And at like 5 in the morning, I'd get more ideas and more ideas. David Duchovny is in the movie with me, too, and he came on board. We started, you know, sort of circling the story together, and suddenly we were financed."
Meg Ryan continued, "There's just two people in the movie. He's really unique. Like, how he's going to say, and I think the closest comparable person is like Walter Matthau, I mean, in the best possible way."
Duchovny's support and filming challenges
Duchovny's support and patience, considering Ryan's novice status as a second-time director, proved pivotal.
Meg Ryan shared, "He was telling us that you shot in a working airport, mostly at night when nobody was there, but you also had to face the challenges of daytime when there were actually travelers.Yes, we had real travelers who really didn't care at all about us."
The conversation turned to Ryan's experience directing, highlighting the immersion in a collaborative process with various artists and the multitude of choices that directors face daily.
Admiration for Nora Ephron and parting moments
As the interview progressed, Ryan expressed her admiration for Nora Ephron. "I just learned the pure delight - she had pure delight in moviemaking. And the the thing about writing and directing is that, you know, the words come to you in a - it's so private, you know, your home. Like it's 5 in the morning and you run the scene in your head and you write it down, and then all of a sudden you cut to the set and there's 150 people who care about bringing that to life and have opinions about that, and it's a joyful thing. And she had the joy of giving this great dinner party every time you were on," Ryan said.
The interview concluded on a lighter note, touching on Halloween memories with Ryan's son dressing up as Count Jackula, a humorous nod to the entertainment industry.
Meyers, appreciative of Ryan's insights and anecdotes, bid her farewell, eagerly anticipating her return.
