WASHINGTON, DC: The FBI has joined the investigation into the sudden death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, offering federal resources to local authorities just days after Iranian officials and affiliated groups publicly intensified rhetoric against the South Carolina Republican.

While the timing has fueled widespread speculation on social media, authorities have not indicated there is any evidence linking Graham's death to foreign involvement.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the bureau's role in a statement posted on X, calling Graham "a devoted public servant, a fierce defender of our nation, and a true patriot" before adding that the FBI "is assisting local authorities and has made every necessary resource available."

The announcement came as online users pointed to recent assassination threats against Graham, prompting renewed scrutiny over the circumstances surrounding his death.

Iran threats fuel online scrutiny

The renewed attention follows days of escalating rhetoric from Iran after Graham voiced strong support for US and Israeli military action. Iranian officials and state-linked figures publicly denounced the senator, while online images circulated showing Graham among politicians depicted with crosshairs over their faces.

Graham himself had previously shared one such image on X, writing, "At least they used a good photo of me. Judge me by my enemies."

The threats gained additional attention after reports emerged that Graham had recently traveled abroad, including a visit to Ukraine, before returning to the United States shortly before his death.

Despite those developments, no US law enforcement agency has suggested that the threats are connected to Graham's death, and no evidence of foul play has been publicly presented.

Officials urge against speculation, emphasize the facts

Patel's statement did not disclose why the FBI became involved beyond noting that the bureau was providing "every necessary resource" to assist local investigators.

As is common in cases involving the sudden death of a sitting US senator or high-profile federal official, multiple agencies may provide investigative or forensic assistance depending on the circumstances.

Social media users have speculated about possible poisoning or foreign involvement, but those claims remain unsupported. Authorities have not announced preliminary findings, nor have they identified any criminal investigation related to Graham's death.

The investigation remains ongoing, with officials expected to determine the cause and manner of death through established forensic procedures. Until investigators release additional information, any connection between recent foreign threats and Graham's death remains unverified.
