MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Former Federal Judge J Michael Luttig delivered a scathing critique of the United States Supreme Court's recent decision granting Donald J Trump and future presidents absolute immunity from criminal prosecution.

In an exclusive Independence Day weekend interview with 'Legal AF' anchor Michael Popok on the Meidas Touch network, Luttig condemned the ruling as an "abomination" that undermines the court's legacy and legitimacy.

Michael Luttig characterizes Donald Trump's immunity ruling as a step toward authoritarianism

The July 1 decision in Trump v United States has sparked controversy, with Luttig likening it to past infamous rulings such as those supporting slavery and internment camps for Japanese-Americans during World War II.

Known for his staunch defense of the Constitution and vocal opposition to Trump's actions, Luttig characterized the decision as a dangerous step towards authoritarianism.

WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 16: J. The bipartisan committee, which has been gathering evidence for almost a year related to the January 6 attack at the U.S. Capitol, is presenting its findings in a series of televised hearings. On January 6, 2021, supporters of former President Donald Trump attacked the U.S. Capitol Building during an attempt to disrupt a congressional vote to confirm the electoral college win for President Joe Biden. In the interview, Luttig pointed out the implications of the court's move, asserting that it effectively grants unprecedented immunity to the executive branch, contrary to principles of democratic governance and the rule of law.

He invoked Thomas Paine's words from 'Common Sense', emphasizing, "But where, say some, is the King of America?...[s]o far as we approve of monarchy…in America the law is king. For as in absolute governments the King is law, so in free countries the law ought to be king; and there ought to be no other.”

Luttig boldly stated in the interview that the emperor has no clothes voicing what many have been thinking: the right wing of the court has abandoned its "conservative" principles and effectively crowned Trump (and candidate Trump) as a new king, according to Meidas News.

Netizens react to Michael Luttig's critique of Supreme Court ruling

A social media user tweeted, "Question is, are we going to do anything about it other than complain?"

Another added, “There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This is the election to determine if we will have future elections. True patriots choose democracy over dictatorship and country over party. Vote."

"It is indeed a cruel twist of fate that the decision was handed down so close to Independence Day. It's disheartening. This ruling is contra to the values of our nation's founding," one user claimed.

A user tweeted, "The Cruelty IS the Point."

"All Trump v U.S. did was sideline Lawfare against Trump. Everyone knows Trump was never going to be convicted of anything after the appeals process for any of these allegations were concluded. This Lawfare was election interference and it failed spectacularly and now the entire DNC and most of its paid influencers are left racing to put out a five alarm fire while we get to speak out freely on X, on the Fourth of July! It’s a great day to be an American!" read a tweet.
