WASHINGTON, DC: Fox News host Laura Ingraham took aim at New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani over what she framed as hypocrisy on voter ID laws, while commentator Tomi Lahren criticized California Gov Gavin Newsom for opposing the SAVE Act.

Both Fox News conservative voices zeroed in on Democrats' resistance to stricter voter identification requirements, arguing recent remarks from Mamdani and Newsom expose the absurdity of their position.

Laura Ingraham ridicules Mamdani

The controversy began after Mamdani encouraged New Yorkers to sign up as emergency snow shovelers in preparation for a blizzard.

He directed those interested to report to local sanitation garages with required documents.

According to the New York City Sanitation Department website, applicants must submit two small photographs, two original forms of identification along with copies and a Social Security card.

Ingraham responded on X with a pointed contrast “VOTER ID? ‘SUPPRESSION’, SHOVELING SNOW? BRING YOUR PAPERWORK.”

She continued “So to shovel snow in NYC, you need multiple IDs. To vote? Democrats say that’s controversial. That’s the irony.”

Emergency shovelers are paid $19.14 per hour, with overtime rising to $28.71 after 40 hours in a week.

Mamdani has opposed voter ID laws, including the federal SAVE Act, which critics argue disproportionately impacts marginalized voters.

On Sunday, February 22, Mamdani defended the documentation requirement, stating “Federal law requires that employers get authorization and documentation to pay people for their work. We are not allowed to just cut checks to individuals for their work.”

Tomi Lahren targets Gavin Newsom over birth certificate comment

Separately, Newsom had argued earlier that complying with the SAVE Act could be difficult for many Americans because it would require locating a birth certificate.

“You've got to find your birth certificate. I have no clue where mine is,” Newsom said, adding that parts of the legislation “go well beyond ID” and tying some provisions historically to Jim Crow-era practices.

Lahren mocked the comment, questioning Newsom’s reasoning.

"But Democrats are still against it. I wonder why. And not just in the Senate. 2028 presidential hopeful and podcaster Gavin Newsom explained his reason for opposing it that made some question whether he's a functioning adult," she said.

Lahren added, "Well, the Save America Act couldn't come at a more important time as we gather more evidence exposing how problematic voter fraud is."
