From 9 acts to 6 dropouts to Trump walking in: Inside the collapse of Freedom 250's concert lineup

Freedom 250 is a national, nonpartisan organization and public-private partnership launched by the Trump administration to lead and promote the United States' 250th anniversary. To celebrate the milestone on June 4, the organization announced the Great American State Fair, a 16-day national exposition running from June 25 through July 10, 2026, spanning from the US Capitol to the Washington Monument. The fair was envisioned as a sprawling celebration on the National Mall, featuring pavilions representing all 56 states and territories, live entertainment, interactive attractions, specialty exhibits and family-friendly experiences.

Almost immediately after the lineup was unveiled, artists began distancing themselves from the event. Morris Day was the first artist to back out of the Freedom 250 concert series. 'Contrary To Rumor, Morris Day and The Time Will Not Be Performing At The 'GREAT AMERICAN STATE FAIR,’ he posted on Instagram, which caption 'It's A No For Me.'

Following Day’s exit, Bret Michaels and Milli Vanilli also distanced themselves from the event, while rapper Young MC and William King of the Commodores made it clear they would not be performing at Freedom 250, which will also feature a UFC fight on the White House South Lawn.

Martina McBride announced that she would no longer perform at the Freedom 250 event, saying organizers had misrepresented the nature of the event. In a statement posted to social media, McBride said she initially agreed to participate because she believed it was 'a nonpartisan event' meant to celebrate all 50 states and bring people together through music. 'I was presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading,' she wrote, adding that 'what we were told is, in fact, not what is happening.' The country star said she did not want fans to feel she was abandoning the values reflected in her music, becoming one of several artists to distance themselves from the increasingly controversial Freedom 250 concert series.

As the Freedom 250 concert lineup unraveled amid a wave of artist withdrawals, Trump lashed out at the performers, dismissing them as 'overpriced' and 'third-rate.' 'We should have a giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY, for 250, instead of having overpriced singers, who nobody wants to hear, whose music is boring, and yet who do nothing but complain,' he wrote in an angry Truth Social post.

After multiple artists withdrew from performing at the upcoming Great American State Fair on the National Mall, Trump called for the cancellation of the concert celebrating America’s 250th birthday. 'Cancel it, just like I canceled my involvement with the failing and unsafe to be in Kennedy Center, because a Highly Conflicted, Crooked Federal Judge, said that I should not be allowed to spend my time and money in order to MAKE THE CENTER GREAT AGAIN, actually, far greater than it ever was before!' the president said.

Trump wasn't ready to abandon the celebration just yet, pivoting to a new plan that would put him at the center of the festivities. After nixing the music performances, Trump floated the idea that he plans to give a speech himself instead. The President said he is considering organizing what he called in his post an 'AMERICA IS BACK Rally.' His headlining speech is scheduled for June 24.
