WASHINGTON, DC: Washington, D.C., has become Donald Trump's canvas, and the president is redrawing the nation's capital in his own image. Since returning to the Oval Office, the Commander-in-Chief has been fixated on his projects to renovate and rebuild huge swathes of the Capital as the country gears up for its 250th anniversary. The facelift projects, like tearing down the White House's East Wing and repainting the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, have modernized aging landmarks while sparking fierce political and cultural debates.

A monumental Triumphal Arch

One of Trump's most eye-catching proposals is the creation of a towering 250ft Triumphal Arch near Arlington National Cemetery as part of America's 250th birthday celebrations. Inspired by Paris’ Arc de Triomphe, the monument will be built at Memorial Circle on Columbus Island between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. The Commission of Fine Arts-approved project will cost about $100 million. That money is expected to come from a combination of public and private funds. Though still in the planning stage, the proposal has already divided opinion. Supporters say the monument would be a fitting tribute to America's 250th anniversary. Critics, however, have raised concerns about its cost, where it would be built, and whether such a large structure fits into Washington's historic landscape. A scaled-down replica of Trump’s proposed 250-foot landmark has also been erected at the Grand American State Fair.

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has become another centerpiece of Trump's makeover of Washington. Spending approximately $16 million, the administration undertook an extensive restoration aimed at improving water quality, repairing aging infrastructure, and refreshing one of the capital's most recognizable landmarks. But what was meant to be a showcase project quickly attracted unwanted attention after algae blooms and peeling paint triggered criticism over the quality of the work. Trump has nonetheless defended the renovation, arguing that preserving iconic monuments requires significant investment. For now, the Reflecting Pool is expected to welcome visitors once again as Americans gather to celebrate Independence Day.

Perhaps no project better reflects Trump's taste for grandeur than the proposed $400 million White House ballroom. Planned as a sprawling 90,000-square-foot venue capable of hosting around 1,000 guests, the project, estimated to cost around $400 million, would replace the temporary tents traditionally used during major state functions. The historic East Potomac Golf Links is also getting a fresh chapter under Trump's redevelopment plans. The proposal seeks to modernize the century-old public course through upgraded facilities, improved amenities, and infrastructure enhancements while retaining its historic character. Located along the Potomac River just south of the National Mall, East Potomac Golf Links has served golfers for nearly a century. The President recently toured the historic Golf Links, showcasing his administration's plans for a sweeping overhaul of the course. Outlining his vision, Trump announced that once completed, the course will be able to host major golf tournaments like the US Open, the Ryder Cup, the PGA Championship, and other top PGA Tour events.  However, Trump’s redevelopment plans for East Potomac Golf Links, which are slated to begin on September 01, remain under judicial review after US District Judge Ana Reyes warned the administration not to start major construction without court approval.

Reimagining Union Station

Union Station, often called Washington's front door, is undergoing one of its biggest transformations in decades. Backed by the Trump administration, the redevelopment aims to modernize the transit hub with upgraded passenger facilities, improved infrastructure, and expanded retail space, while preserving its Beaux-Arts architecture. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy previously announced that a staggering investment of a $466 million has been made in Washington Union Station to improve the customer experience for the 37 million people who pass through it each year.

The Kennedy Center culture clash

Last year, Trump launched an extensive renovation of the Kennedy Center, with plans to repaint columns, restore marble, replace seating, and upgrade performance stages. The refurbishment was not limited to bricks. Trump also reshuffled the leadership of the centre, prompting high-profile resignations, artist boycotts, and a heated national debate over politics and the arts. Another major block for the project came on May 29, when a federal judge ruled that the president had illegally added his name to the Kennedy Center and blocked the administration from shutting the venue for renovations. Responding on Truth Social, Trump defended the overhaul, saying millions of dollars had already been committed to marble, furniture, steel, air-conditioning, heating, and other improvements.
