Hawaii’s 90-foot Hōlei Sea Arch collapses into Pacific as before-and-after photos show what remains
One of Hawaii's most recognizable coastal landmarks has vanished into the Pacific, leaving behind a dramatically altered stretch of volcanic coastline. The 90-foot Hōlei Sea Arch at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park was still standing on September 23 but had collapsed by the night of September 27, according to the National Park Service. The exact moment it fell remains unknown. The park was temporarily closed during Tropical Storm Nolo, meaning the formation could have fallen while visitors were away. However, officials have not established that the storm caused the collapse. The surrounding cliffs had been unstable for years as waves, earthquakes and volcanic activity steadily reshaped the coast. Photos taken before and after the collapse reveal just how dramatically the landscape has changed.
