Thousands of Venezuelans fled into the streets after two powerful earthquakes struck within moments of each other, sending buildings swaying across Caracas and triggering panic throughout the country. The first quake measured magnitude 7.2 before being followed less than a minute later by an even stronger 7.5 aftershock, according to the US Geological Survey, leaving residents scrambling for safety as rescue teams rushed to damaged neighborhoods.

Thousands flee as the earth begins to shake

Residents gathered outside their Parque Central homes in Caracas after being evacuated moments after the powerful earthquakes struck on June 24. Many remained outdoors for hours, fearing additional aftershocks as emergency officials assessed whether the towering apartment buildings were safe to re-enter. The first earthquake measured magnitude 7.2 before a stronger 7.5 aftershock followed less than a minute later, sending tremors across Venezuela and parts of the Caribbean. Although authorities began inspecting damaged structures immediately, many families chose to stay in open spaces as uncertainty gripped the capital.

People wept openly while others stood in silence, overwhelmed by relief after surviving the disaster or fearing for relatives whose whereabouts remained unknown. Many residents chose not to return indoors, instead remaining together in parks, sidewalks and open spaces while authorities monitored aftershocks and continued rescue efforts. Venezuela lies in a seismically active zone where the Caribbean Plate meets the South American Plate. Interim leader Rodriguez says at least 32 people have been killed and and 700 injured when buildings collapsed.

Clutching their phones, evacuated residents desperately tried to contact relatives and friends while waiting outside Caracas' Parque Central complex. With communications disrupted in some areas and reports of collapsed buildings emerging, many families spent anxious hours trying to confirm whether loved ones were safe. Delcy Rodriguez spoke on state television just before 1 am in Caracas. She has been running Venezuela since the US military ousted and captured President Nicolas Maduro in January. She said the preliminary casualty count of 32 people dead and 700 injured does not include casualties from La Guaira state, near Caracas and home to the city's airport, which is the worst affected.

As frightened residents poured into the streets, families held one another close while trying to process the terrifying moments they had just experienced. For countless parents, the greatest relief was simply finding their children safe after the violent shaking, even as aftershocks and uncertainty continued throughout the day. Interim leader Rodriguez said, "Dozens of buildings have collapsed, and we are currently carrying out very intense rescue efforts to save as many lives as God allows us to save." She continued, "I also want to say that this is a true tragedy. From here, we send our message of solidarity, and to those families who have lost loved ones, we reaffirm our condolences and our support in these difficult hours.”

Rescue workers combed through the remains of a collapsed building as emergency operations continue across affected parts of Caracas. Specialized teams worked carefully through piles of concrete and twisted debris, racing against time in hopes of locating anyone trapped beneath the wreckage. Authorities deployed emergency personnel to damaged neighborhoods soon after the earthquakes, while engineers inspected unstable structures and rescue crews searched through collapsed buildings. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday the United States would send resources to Venezuela and the State Department has already mobilized a disaster assistance team and task force to deliver and coordinate critical assistance to Venezuelans. “The US stands ready, willing, and able to help,” Trump said in a Truth Social post Wednesday evening stateside.
