The new construction follows a troubled renovation project launched earlier this year as part of the administration's effort to prepare Washington for the nation's 250th anniversary celebrations. The overhaul included installing a new blue waterproof lining, but within weeks the project drew attention after the water turned bright green because of algae growth and portions of the new surface began peeling. "We drained the beautiful 'Reflecting Pool' today in order to fix the scars and damage that was done by the Vandals two weeks ago," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "The Parks Department had to empty the water in order to fix the water tight basin," he said. "It will be refilled and put back into service soon."

Trump has consistently argued that the latest repairs are necessary because vandals intentionally damaged the new liner rather than because of construction defects. He has claimed that individuals cut long slashes into the waterproof membrane, requiring the pool to be drained so the damage could be repaired. The administration has also said several people have been arrested or cited in connection with alleged vandalism. Trump reiterated that the individuals allegedly responsible should "pay a big price for the damage done."

Trump's claims, however, have drawn scrutiny because the administration has not publicly released evidence supporting the alleged large-scale cuts to the liner. Independent reporting has noted that while authorities have announced arrests related to activity at the Reflecting Pool, officials have not produced public documentation showing the extensive damage described by the president. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has defended the administration's position, saying officials believe vandalism caused the damage and confirming that the administration intends to proceed with repairs using the same contractor rather than reopening the bidding process.

The president has also dismissed claims that the latest repairs point to problems with the original restoration work. Instead, he has maintained that the damage was caused after the project was completed, emphasizing that the pool had to be drained solely because the liner had allegedly been cut. Administration officials have echoed that explanation, saying the repairs are intended to address vandalism rather than correct construction deficiencies.

Recent photographs show the basin reduced to a wide expanse of gray concrete, with construction equipment and workers occupying an area that typically serves as one of the capital's most photographed locations. The temporary closure has altered the familiar vista connecting the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument, though pedestrian access around the site remains available.
