The trial of Lindsay Clancy is underway in Plymouth, Massachusetts, more than three years after the January 2023 tragedy that left her three young children dead. Clancy has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, and while both the prosecution and defense agree on many of the underlying facts, they strongly disagree on one central question: whether she was legally criminally responsible for her actions. Over the coming weeks, jurors will hear from family members, investigators, medical professionals and mental health experts as they examine the evidence. Here are seven of the most significant pieces of evidence expected to shape the trial.

Patrick Clancy's testimony

Among the first witnesses called was Patrick Clancy, Lindsay Clancy's husband at the time of the incident. Jurors heard his account of the family's daily life, his wife's mental health in the months before January 2023 and the events leading up to that evening. His testimony is important because it provides firsthand insight into the family's routine and Lindsay Clancy's behavior before the tragedy.

Medical and mental health records

A major focus of the trial is Lindsay Clancy's psychiatric treatment before the incident. Jurors are reviewing records documenting her appointments with mental health providers, prescribed medications and reported symptoms. Among the expected witnesses are Dr Jennifer Tufts, a psychiatrist who treated Clancy, Rebecca Jollotta, a psychiatric nurse practitioner involved in her care, and Dr Alia Goodheart of McLean Hospital, where Clancy received treatment shortly before the incident. Doctors, nurses and clinicians from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital are also expected to testify about her treatment and medical history. While both sides agree Clancy sought extensive mental health care, they disagree on what those records ultimately reveal about her mental state and whether they support her insanity defense.

Expert psychiatric opinions

Perhaps the most closely watched testimony will come from forensic psychiatrists called by both sides. Defense experts are expected to argue that Clancy was experiencing postpartum psychosis and therefore lacked criminal responsibility under Massachusetts law. Prosecutors are expected to present experts who dispute that conclusion and argue she remained legally responsible for her actions.

Text messages and digital communications

Jurors are reviewing text messages exchanged between Lindsay Clancy and her husband, Patrick Clancy, in the days and hours before the January 2023 incident. Prosecutors and defense attorneys are also expected to examine communications involving Lindsay and some of her healthcare providers as they present competing interpretations of her mental state. In addition, jurors are expected to hear testimony from family members—including Lindsay's parents, Michael and Paula Musgrove—which may provide context for her behavior and interactions during the same period.

Testimony from healthcare providers

Doctors, nurses and mental health professionals who treated Clancy before January 2023 are expected to explain the care she received, the symptoms she reported and the treatment plans that were put in place. Their testimony could help jurors better understand the progression of her mental health in the months before the incident.

Evidence collected during the investigation

Investigators have begun walking jurors through the evidence collected from the Clancy family's Duxbury home as they piece together the sequence of events on January 24, 2023. Among those who have testified are Duxbury Police Officers Stephen Hall and Brian Josephine, as well as firefighter and paramedic PJ Hussey, who were among the first responders to arrive after Patrick Clancy's 911 call. Jurors have also been shown photographs, diagrams and other investigative materials documenting the scene, while prosecutors have used the testimony to establish the timeline of events. The defense has not disputed many of the underlying facts of the investigation but argues that the central issue is Lindsay Clancy's mental state and criminal responsibility at the time. As the trial continues, additional law enforcement officers, emergency responders and forensic experts are expected to build on the factual record presented to the jury.
