Eight years after his disappointing run in Michigan's Democratic gubernatorial primary, Abdul El-Sayed, the physician-turned-politician, returned with a grassroots campaign centered on the message “Michigan is not for sale,” defeating Rep. Haley Stevens, who was backed by big money and the establishment. Stevens's campaign committee was supported by nearly $30 million, including massive funding from AIPAC. El-Sayed's victory in Michigan marks an important milestone in his political career, which goes all the way back to his tenure at the Michigan Health Department.

Before entering politics, El-Sayed became the youngest health chief in the state at age 30. Former mayor Mike Duggan appointed the physician and epidemiologist to lead a health agency that was struggling to function under state control. El-Sayed gained wide recognition as a public health leader, which earned him a statewide profile.

The 2018 campaign

In 2018, El-Sayed resigned as executive director of the Detroit Health Department and announced his run for Michigan governor. Despite pushing a progressive agenda that included universal healthcare during his campaign, he lacked the financial backing his rivals had. Although he lost the Democratic primary, the campaign established him as one of Michigan's most recognizable progressive voices.

Despite a crushing defeat, El-Sayed remained active in public service even after 2018, when he founded the Southpaw PAC, a political action committee that supported progressive candidates. In 2020, he joined Bernie Sanders on his presidential campaign as a national surrogate, which expanded his prominence beyond Michigan. He also served as director of Wayne County's Department of Health, Human and Veterans Services, returning to government leadership.

El-Sayed returns with sharper message

Eight years after losing his bid for governor, El-Sayed returned with a rallying cry, “Michigan is not for sale,” which became his campaign slogan. Backed by a broader grassroots network, El-Sayed challenged billionaires and outside funding in elections. El-Sayed pledged to “get money out of politics, put money in people’s pockets, and pass Medicare for All.”

The comeback

Abdul El-Sayed defeated Rep Haley Stevens in Michigan's Democratic Senate primary, overcoming a campaign heavily funded by outside groups. His opponent, Haley Stevens entered the race with a significant financial advantage. Her campaign raised about $8.9 million, but the bigger boost came from outside groups. In the final five weeks of the primary, super PACs supporting Stevens booked $26.9 million in television ads, compared with $2.1 million for groups backing Abdul El-Sayed. The largest outside supporter was AIPAC and its affiliated groups, which spent nearly $30 million on her behalf, the organization's biggest investment ever in a single race. His win sends an important message that grassroots campaigning can prevail over high-cost campaigns.
