US troops, Florida Task Force 1 launch heroic rescue mission

US troops and rescue workers from Florida Task Force 1 boarded a military aircraft at Homestead Air Reserve Base as they departed for earthquake-ravaged Venezuela. Carrying specialized rescue equipment, the team left their families behind to help strangers facing unimaginable loss. Paying tribute to the rescuers, US Southern Command wrote on X, 'They carry with them far more than specialized training and equipment. They carry compassion, hope, and commitment to stand beside those facing unimaginable hardship.'

Trump says US is 'ready, willing and able to help'

Inside the aircraft, rescue specialists and troops sat quietly, preparing for the mission ahead and knowing they were flying toward one of the deadliest natural disasters to strike Venezuela in decades. Every minute mattered, with survivors still believed to be trapped beneath collapsed buildings. President Donald Trump pledged American support soon after the earthquakes, saying the United States was 'ready, willing and able to help' the Venezuelan people. The deployment reflected that commitment, with the State Department leading the humanitarian response and the Department of Defense providing transportation and logistical support.

Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez confirmed she had spoken with President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding the humanitarian response, thanking the United States for its assistance as rescue efforts intensified. Specialized search-and-rescue personnel from multiple US agencies, including Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s Florida Task Force 1 and the Los Angeles County Fire Department, joined the international relief effort, bringing years of disaster-response experience to the devastated country. These elite teams are trained to locate survivors buried beneath collapsed structures using advanced search equipment, rescue dogs, and technical recovery tools. Their arrival added critical manpower as emergency crews worked around the clock in dangerous conditions, hoping to find survivors before time ran out.

Deadly twin quakes leave trail of destruction

Based on the latest reports, the twin 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes caused widespread destruction across northern Venezuela, particularly in the capital and coastal regions. Caracas experienced extensive structural damage, particularly in residential neighborhoods. Significant destruction was also reported in Carabobo, Yaracuy, Miranda, and surrounding states. Hundreds of buildings either collapsed or sustained severe structural damage. At least eight hospitals were damaged, complicating emergency medical care. The Venezuelan Red Cross headquarters and the French embassy were among the damaged buildings.

Rescuers carefully navigated mountains of shattered concrete and twisted steel as they searched for survivors inside one of the many buildings destroyed by the earthquakes. The desperate operation continued day and night, with crews refusing to give up despite the enormous scale of the destruction. Among the most remarkable rescues was an infant who was pulled alive from the rubble by American personnel days after the earthquakes struck.

US Southern Command’s Major General Kevin J Jarrard and Chargé d’Affaires John M Barrett also arrived in Venezuela to coordinate relief operations alongside Venezuelan officials. The leaders conducted an aerial survey of the hardest-hit areas to help direct emergency resources where they were needed most. Sharing images from the visit, SOUTHCOM wrote, 'Standing with the people of Venezuela.' The command added that US officials were working 'to coordinate State Department-led US support to earthquake relief efforts' while assessing the widespread devastation firsthand.
