Red, white and roaring: US fans erupt after USMNT's dream World Cup start
WASHINGTON, DC: American soccer fans transformed SoFi Stadium into a cauldron of noise, with stars-and-stripes face paint, waving flags, and deafening chants, and couldn’t have asked for a better start to their home World Cup. The packed house at SoFi Stadium shook like a Southern California earthquake as the United States men's national team opened its first home World Cup in 32 years with its biggest win in the tournament – a dynamic 4-1 victory over Paraguay. The 70,492 fans at SoFi Stadium, very few of whom were cheering for Paraguay, celebrated from nearly the opening kickoff. Their celebrations hit fever pitch as Gio Reyna sealed the historic win, scoring another goal in the final moments of second-half injury time.
