The appearance continued something of a US Open tradition for the couple: Feldman has accompanied Guthrie to the tournament on multiple occasions. Guthrie and Feldman were photographed seated together during the men's singles championship. Their appearance capped a US Open that had already become personally significant for Guthrie weeks earlier.

On August 25, she and Feldman attended the 'Roger Federer: An Icon Returns to New York' exhibition during Fan Week. Guthrie, described as a longtime tennis fan, was there to support Federer, one of her favorite athletes. Federer played exhibition matches involving Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi and John McEnroe. But the outing carried additional significance: it marked Guthrie's first red-carpet appearance since her mother Nancy disappeared from her Arizona home on February 1. Nearly seven months later, Guthrie was gradually returning to public life while the search for her mother continued.

Just three days before her latest US Open outing, Guthrie made a rare reference to Nancy while discussing an upcoming 'Today' trip to Ireland. She spoke about her mother's Irish family roots and their connection to Galway. The comment followed several more direct public appeals Guthrie has made since Nancy mysteriously disappeared, including speaking about the family's continuing hope and asking for information about her mother's whereabouts.
