Trump's new security ring around White House: 5 changes transforming the iconic grounds

The administration has been considering permanent gates or fencing at the 15th and 17th Street ends of Pennsylvania Avenue, allowing the area directly in front of the White House to be shut to pedestrians more readily during heightened security.

Plans have also been developed for fencing around Lafayette Square, replacing the temporary barriers repeatedly erected when the Secret Service needs to close the park.

Security-focused work has been reported at the White House's main North Portico entrance/front door, separate from the cosmetic renovation work taking place around it.

The layers of fencing around the White House are only part of the security picture. When the Secret Service determines that additional protection is needed, the secure perimeter can extend well beyond the White House fence and into some of Washington's most recognizable public spaces.

The security transformation around the White House could eventually extend beneath the ground. Plans are advancing for a permanent underground facility that would screen visitors before they enter the White House complex. The proposed White House Visitor Screening Facility would span approximately 33,000 square feet beneath Sherman Park, southeast of the White House.
