Trump's border wall cuts through the Texas desert as striking photos capture Big Bend's changing landscape

An aerial photograph taken near Sierra Blanca on September 23 shows a long stretch of border wall cutting through the surrounding desert vegetation. A broad cleared construction corridor runs alongside the steel panels, with mountains stretching across the horizon. Border-wall construction near Sierra Blanca marks another chapter in one of Trump's longest-running political promises. Since his first presidential campaign, Trump has championed physical barriers as essential to stopping unauthorized crossings and strengthening border security. He famously promised to build a wall along the southern border during his 2016 campaign, making the project a defining symbol of his immigration agenda.

Unlike the heavily developed border crossings around major cities, the Big Bend region is known for its remote desert wilderness and the Rio Grande winding through towering canyons. The landscape has become central to the debate over extending border barriers into more isolated areas. While the administration argues that stronger border infrastructure is necessary, critics question how construction could affect one of the country's most distinctive natural regions.

Rows of tall steel bollards stand against the wide-open desert near Sierra Blanca in Hudspeth County. Photographed on September 23, 2026, the newly erected barrier creates a stark contrast with the surrounding mountains and sparse vegetation. The construction is part of the Trump administration's renewed effort to expand physical barriers along the southern border.

The large equipment yard near Terlingua illustrates the preparations associated with Trump's broader border-wall expansion. During his first term, Trump repeatedly defended the project as necessary for national security. His second administration has renewed that effort, pursuing additional barriers and roads in areas where the border remains largely open terrain. The wider initiative carries a reported $46 billion price tag, with construction proposed across parts of Big Bend where residents have long relied on the surrounding terrain and river.

Not everyone in West Texas welcomes Trump's plans to expand the border wall. Protesters gathered to oppose new barriers in the Big Bend region. Residents and conservation advocates have raised concerns about the potential impact on private property, wildlife and the area's natural landscape. The opposition has also reached the courts, with a federal judge temporarily restricting certain construction activities as the legal battle continues.
