WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump promised to restore the capital's century-old pool between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial after complaining about leaks and murky water. The 600-meter-long reflecting pool was meant to be one of the capital’s showpieces ahead of the country’s 250th birthday celebrations. Instead, the $16 million renovation has sparked widespread criticism after patches of green algae, cloudy water, and construction concerns overshadowed Trump’s ambitious restoration project. The President has blamed vandals for much of the damage, while critics have questioned whether the rushed timeline contributed to the problems.

Reflecting Pool renovation comes under fire

In preparation for the nation's 250th birthday celebrations, President Donald Trump ordered a major overhaul of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in April, with one of the project's most visible changes being a fresh coat of "American Flag Blue" across the pool's bottom. But the renovation soon became mired in controversy that extended well beyond the algae blooms and peeling liner that emerged after reopening. The National Park Service awarded the resurfacing contract to Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings without a competitive bidding process, drawing scrutiny over the procurement. Media reports also highlighted the contractor's ties to Trump's orbit and its limited federal contracting experience, fueling allegations of favoritism. Adding to the criticism, reports said at least one company involved in previous Reflecting Pool renovations declined to bid, arguing the compressed timeline to complete the project before the July 4 celebrations was unrealistic—a deadline that critics say may have contributed to the project's subsequent problems.

Built in the 1920s, the iconic concrete-lined Reflecting Pool has long mirrored both the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, drawing millions of visitors each year. But beneath its picture-perfect surface lies a long history of maintenance challenges. Its shallow, still water creates ideal conditions for algae growth, while the swampy ground beneath the National Mall has caused the structure to gradually sink over the decades, leading to cracked pipes, leaks, and recurring repairs. The National Park Service tried to address some of these problems with an 18-month, $34 million US project that began in 2010 under former President Barack Obama. But within weeks of reopening in 2012, it already had to be drained and cleaned because its surface was covered in algae.

Did Trump's motorcade make things worse?

While Trump has blamed vandalism for the worsening condition of the Reflecting Pool, many have questioned whether his own motorcade is to blame. On May 7, Trump visited the drained pool to inspect the fresh coating he had ordered. To access the site, Trump’s motorcade – including the nearly 20,000-pound presidential limousine and a convoy of armored SUVs – drove across the Reflecting Pool’s basin while workers were still applying its new surface. The moment was captured by multiple outlets, sparking speculation about whether the repeated passage of heavy armored vehicles may have placed additional stress on the surrounding infrastructure.

The algae mystery after Trump's UFC party

Days after the UFC celebration at the White House, the Reflecting Pool developed a widespread algal bloom, prompting questions about whether the high-profile event or the renovation itself had contributed to the pool’s deteriorating condition. Officials have not publicly concluded that the event caused the bloom. President Trump blamed vandals for causing the algae bloom, but the National Park Service had asked the contractor to remove the bulky water filters around the pool before the big event for Trump’s UFC party.

Perhaps the most striking image came just days before, when visitors found sections of the Reflecting Pool surrounded by fencing while crews worked to address peeling liner and algae growth. As workers complete the final repairs, officials say the Reflecting Pool will once again serve as one of the focal points of Washington's July 4 celebrations. Whether the latest fixes prove durable remains to be seen, but the project has already sparked debate over procurement, construction timelines and the challenges of maintaining one of the nation's most recognizable landmarks. For now, the Reflecting Pool is expected to welcome visitors once again as Americans gather to celebrate Independence Day.
