Dramatic scenes near White House as gunshots trigger massive Secret Service response
WASHINGTON, DC: The streets surrounding the White House descended into chaos as a gunman opened fire, triggering an immediate lockdown of the presidential complex and a sweeping security crackdown led by the Secret Service. A volley of gunfire was heard at around 6:00 pm when the person approached a checkpoint on Pennsylvania Avenue NW. As officers attempted to stop the gunman, he "removed a weapon from his bag and began firing at posted officers." Officers returned fire and hit the suspect, who was transported to an area hospital, where he later died. The individual has since been identified as Nasire Best, a 21-year-old Maryland resident, with a reported history of mental illness and previous stay-away orders.
