George Clooney says Democrats are 'not going to win' 2024 election with Biden as presidential candidate
WASHINGTON, DC: Actor George Clooney, who recently hosted a high-profile fundraiser for President Joe Biden's reelection campaign has now expressed concerns over his candidacy.
Shifting his stance, the actor said Democrats are “not going to win in November with this president.”
George Clooney's concern for Joe Biden's presidential candidacy
In The New York Times editorial published on Wednesday, July 10, Clooney said, “I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As a vice president and as president. I consider him a friend, and I believe in him. Believe in his character. Believe in his morals."
"In the last four years, he’s won many of the battles he’s faced. But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time. None of us can,” he said of Biden.
Clooney, known for his strong Democratic affiliations participated in a high-profile Los Angeles fundraiser for Biden's campaign.
The event was a significant success, raising $30 million.
Despite the event's success, the Academy Award winner observed a troubling difference in Biden.
“It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe 'big F-ing deal' Biden of 2010," he wrote.
"He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate,” he added.
Joe Biden's shaky debate performance and concerns among Democrats
Joe Biden's disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump in Atlanta raised questions among Democrats over the president's age and mental fitness,
During the face-off, the 81-year-old commander-in-chief appeared to halt and meander, sparking concerns within his own party about his capability to serve another four-year term, according to The Hill.
However, Biden has remained firm in his stance that he will continue his reelection campaign despite calls from some members of the Democratic Party to quit the 2024 race and widespread criticism.
George Clooney says he's concerned about Joe Biden's old age
'The American' actor did not mince words about his observation of Joe Biden in the editorial published in The New York Times.
“Was he tired? Yes. A cold? Maybe. But our party leaders need to stop telling us that 51 million people didn’t see what we just saw," said the 63-year-old actor.
"We’re all so terrified by the prospect of a second Trump term that we’ve opted to ignore every warning sign. Is it fair to point these things out? It has to be," he continued.
"This is about age. Nothing more. But also nothing that can be reversed,” Clooney added.
Referencing private conversations with senators, congress members, and governors, Clooney said, “We are not going to win in November with this president. On top of that, we won’t win the House, and we’re going to lose the Senate."
The actor then highlighted a perceived contradiction within the Democratic Party.
“We love to talk about how the Republican Party has ceded all power, and all of the traits that made it so formidable with Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush, to a single person who seeks to hold on to the presidency, and yet most of our members of Congress are opting to wait and see if the dam breaks,” said Clooney.
“But the dam has broken. We can put our heads in the sand and pray for a miracle in November, or we can speak the truth," he added.
